Investigators have uncovered evidence linking six police officers arrested for abducting and extorting five Chinese nationals to wider cross-border smuggling operations along the Thai-Cambodian frontier, Royal Thai Police spokesman Pol Lt Gen Trairong Phiwphan said.
Authorities revealed that suspects include Thai, Chinese, and Cambodian nationals, with some Cambodian figures believed to wield influence along the border.
Sa Kaeo police investigations found clear links between illegal border crossings and Cambodia-based scammer networks. Cambodians and Chinese allegedly acted as intermediaries, while Thais received those smuggled into the country. Police are considering charges under transnational organised crime laws.
Six police officers have so far been charged. Four officers and one civilian were initially arrested, followed by two more officers. Investigators believe the group includes all officers directly involved in the abduction and release of the Chinese nationals.
Investigators are continuing to gather digital evidence, including mobile phone data, CCTV footage, bank records and cryptocurrency transactions, to identify any additional suspects. Officials said evidence from phones and surveillance cameras was already substantial, while financial tracing is continuing.
