6 fire crews tackle blaze at abandoned Rosslynlee Hospital in Midlothian

FIRE crews have tackled a blaze at an abandoned hospital in Midlothian.

Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) received reports of a blaze on the site of the former Rosslynlee Hospital at around 1.51am on Tuesday.

Six fire engines attended the incident at the former mental health facility, and no casualties were reported.

Members of the public have been urged to avoid the area, with SFRS issuing a statement on Twitter/X which reads: “We are currently in attendance at a fire within the former Rosslynlee Hospital in Midlothian.

“Please avoid the area and, if you live locally, keep windows and doors closed where possible.”

Rosslynlee Hospital, which dates back to the 1800s, was closed in 2011 and work is currently underway to build new homes on the site.

It was formerly known as Rosslynlee Mental Hospital when it was adopted by the NHS, before being renamed in the 1960s.

The category-C listed building had reportedly been in a state of decline since the 1980s before its eventual closure in the 2010s.

The site was earmarked for the building of luxury apartments in 2023, with developments set to be carried out by the Robertson Group.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 1.51am on Tuesday, 15 July, to reports of a fire affecting a derelict building on Rosslynlee, Roslin, Midlothian.

"Operations Control mobilised six fire appliances to the scene to make the area safe.

“There were no reported casualties.”

Midlothian Council and Police Scotland were approached for comment.
