Any parent who drives can confirm that even the shortest of journeys with a baby in the back can feel like walking – well, driving – on eggshells. (Especially when it comes to pausing at traffic lights. Anyone else?) But one accessory that can help make transporting your precious bundle from A to B that bit easier is a baby car mirror.
The right baby car mirror enables you to keep sight of your infant without needing to turn around or take your eyes off the road when they’re sitting in a rear-facing car seat. (In the UK, it’s a legal requirement for a baby to face backwards in a car seat until they’re 15 months old or weigh 9kg.) Not just for witnessing tears and tantrums, having the right baby car mirror can also offer you peace of mind if your little one is fast asleep or simply enjoying the ride.
With plenty of options available – and many of them seemingly very similar at a first glance – choosing the right baby car mirror might feel overwhelming. However, there are a few key factors that should be considered, including the size of the mirror, whether it offers a wide enough viewing angle, and if it stays in place during bumps in the road (we’re looking at you, potholes). Durability, ease of installation and additional features like lights or built-in entertainment for babies are also important consideration points for safety-conscious families.
No idea where to begin? Hop in – we’ve tracked down the best baby car mirrors on the market, which all promise to make travelling with your small child that bit easier.

LittleLife baby car mirror with light
Rating: 5/5
Best: baby car mirror overall
Mirror size: 25cm x 17cm
Installation: Strap and buckle
Why we love it
- Great for night time journeys
- Remote included for easy control from the front
Take note
- Batteries needed for mirror and control
I was genuinely impressed by this baby car mirror. With LED lights built into its vertical sides, it performs brilliantly at night while still offering excellent daytime visibility. The straps were slightly fiddly to secure at first, but once fitted, the mirror felt stable and easy to adjust into the right position, offering me a crystal-clear view of my baby from the driver’s seat.
The included remote control is a smart touch, making it simple to switch the lights on from the front as dusk falls. (Be aware that batteries aren’t included for the mirror or the remote.) Overall, it feels like a well-designed, reliable baby car mirror that strikes a great balance between safety, convenience and ease of use.

Halfords backseat baby mirror
Rating: 4/5
Best: budget baby car mirror
Mirror size: 17cm x 23cm
Installation: Strap and buckle
Why we love it
- Around 60 per cent cheaper than some of the other models on our list
- Easy to use
Take note
- Smaller mirror size
Practical, easy to use, neatly designed and all for a round tenner, the Halford’s backseat baby car mirror is a solid choice if you’re looking for a mirror on a budget. I liked its circular design from an aesthetic point of view, although it lacks the dimensions that some of the others on our list offer.
That said, it still provided a perfectly satisfactory view of my daughter from the front seat – and I found it easy to secure on to the headrest and get into position, too.

Thule car seat baby mirror
Rating: 4.5/5
Best: premium baby car mirror
Mirror size: 25cm x 18cm
Installation: Strap and buckle
Why we love it
- Very easy to install
- Fantastic visibility
Take note
- I found the protective plastic cover hard to peel off – the edges of it got stuck
Outdoor and transportation accessory company Thule is renowned for the versatile and durable approach it applies to its product designs, and its baby car mirror is no different. With a wide-angle mirror that provides a perfect view of your baby, I found the mirror easy to strap into place from the boot and straightforward to tilt into the correct position. I loved its size and how simple it was to install, and also noted that it didn’t jolt out of position when driving.
It’s embarrassing to admit but the only issue I did have was when it came to removing the clear protective film on the mirror – the edges of the cover got a bit stuck and needed pulling out. It also came with an instruction manual, which felt excessive when it was so easy to use.

Royal Rascals lockable baby car mirror
Rating: 4.5/5
Best: secure-fit baby car mirror
Mirror size: 24.5cm x 17.5cm x 8.5cm
Installation: Strap and buckle
Why we love it
- Mirror position can be locked in place
- Shatterproof glass
- Made from non-toxic materials
Take note
- Make sure you don’t over-tighten the nut that locks the mirror in place
While the majority of baby car mirrors promise security thanks to their strap-and-buckle design, Royal Rascals takes things one step further with its 360-degree rotation and lockable ball joint. This means that the mirror won’t shift out of place once you’ve found the perfect position, even if you accidentally knock it when moving your child’s seat – and when testing, even a solid elbow to the mirror didn’t shift it once it was locked in place.
From an aesthetic perspective, I loved the pop of yellow against the mirror’s black frame. The mirror is generously sized and offers great visibility from the front. Royal Rascals also states that the mirror is shatterproof and made from non-toxic materials, which offers yet more reassurance for parents. The mirror is also delivered with a handy “baby on board” sign.

Ickle Bubba universal car back seat mirror
Rating: 4.5/5
Best: easy installation baby car mirror
Mirror size: 17.5cm x 25cm
Installation: Strap and buckle
Why we love it
- Easy to fit
- Large mirror size
Ickle Bubba’s baby car mirror ticks all the boxes. Sleek in design and easy to install with its buckle and straps, I found it simple to fit it on to the back of my car seat. The mirror’s generous size meant it effectively filled the whole of the head rest, which meant I had a great view of my baby daughter when I was sitting in the front.
One of the mid-range options on our list, it’s a great choice if you’re looking for an easy-to-use product that does exactly what you need it to and looks great at the same time.

Vertbaudet hanging or resting toy
Rating: 4/5
Best: interactive baby car mirror
Mirror size: 25cm x 17cm
Installation: Clips attach to the seat of the car with a velcro strap to hold it in place
Why we love it
- Great way to entertain your baby on the road
- Can be taken indoors once you’ve reached your destination
Take note
- No straps and buckle, so can’t be positioned as well as others
Arguably more a toy that small babies will be mesmerised by than a serious piece of kit for your car, Vertbaudet’s product is a fun choice for parents who are looking for a way to keep their child amused on the road. Adorned with sensory toys, it can be taken indoors and added to a play mat for tummy time; the brand suggests that it can also be added to a cot side.
Playfulness aside, the mirror is pretty impossible to position in comparison to others on our list, relying on the user sliding two plastic rings around the arms of the head rest to hold it in place rather than straps and buckles. However, when I tested it with my eight-month-old baby in the car, she was delighted to watch herself in the mirror and endlessly amused by trying to reach the attached toys.
