6 Amazon Clothing Items That Are a Waste of Money

If you have to buy it twice, the price isn’t that nice. Amazon has some deals on quality clothing, but there are tons of poor-quality pieces to sift through that could drain your wallet and keep you from finding pieces you’d love for years to come.

While the price might be tempting, the reviews, quality and durability of these Amazon clothing items aren’t worth your hard-earned money

Women’s Square Neck Wide Strap Crop Tank Top

  • Price: $19.99

This women’s square neck cropped tank top is cute and even resembles a more expensive brand. However, you might want to spring for the quality option instead so you don’t have to buy it twice. Customer reviews average a 4.2 out of five for this product, but some reviews tell a different story

Multiple customers reported that the lighter colors of this shirt, like beige, white and pink, are see-through. Plus, it might not last long after the first wash. A few reviewers mentioned the poor quality of this crop top and that the stitches started unraveling after a few uses.

Women’s Square Neck Sundress With Pockets

  • Price: $29.99 to $34.99

It has pockets! But are those pockets actually useful? Not on this dress. Unfortunately, the pockets on this women’s square-neck sundress sit awkwardly at the waistline, so they’re too high to be functional. If that wasn’t enough to dissuade you from adding this to your cart, even positive reviews mentioned how sheer the fabric is on this dress.

For better quality, spend a little more for this 100%-European linen sundress from Quince for $79.90. The linen makes it perfectly breathable for summer. Plus, it still has pockets.

Men’s Relaxed-Fit Stretch Jeans

  • Price: $27.90

No one wants to rip their jeans, and with quality denim, that’s not something you typically have to worry about with regular use. However, these Amazon Essentials men’s stretch jeans have some concerning issues with ripping. Multiple reviewers mentioned that after the first wash, the jeans started fraying at the bottom.

You may have to buy these jeans twice over, so it makes more sense to spend a little extra for quality jeans with True Classic. The straight high-stretch jeans are $69.99.

Women’s Standard Pareo Wrap Swimsuit Cover Up

  • Price: $41.50 to $113.00

Getting a swimsuit cover-up that pulls double duty as a dress and a skirt is a summer wardrobe hack. However, there are better options than a mostly viscose fabric and reportedly lower-quality item from Amazon.

Instead, you could go to Anthropologie and find a 100%-cotton sarong for $78. For a more cost-effective option, try Target’s Shade & Shore sarong for $20.

Men’s Short-Sleeve Polo Shirt

  • Price: $13.60

Polo shirts are one of the most versatile items in any man’s closet, so it’s safe to say that you’d plan to get plenty of use out of them. However, you might not get much mileage from an Amazon Essentials men’s shirt sleeve polo. According to multiple reviews, these shirts have a bad habit of shrinking after one or two washes, and the quality is questionable.

The Gap is a go-to brand for durable basics, and you’ll currently find its men’s pique polo shirts on sale for up to 40% off. That pricing puts them on par with the price you’d find on Amazon.

Women’s Mid-Rise Curvy Skinny Jeans

  • Price: $18.90

Much like the Amazon Essentials men’s jeans, the women’s mid-rise jeans aren’t much better. While there are few complaints of ripping with these jeans, there’s something much more foul about them — the odor. Several customers have reported a pungent chemical-like odor on the jeans that doesn’t come out even after multiple washes.

Instead, head to Banana Republic Factory for its curvy mid-rise skinny jean. These are regularly priced at $80 but are currently 50% off for a sale price of $40.

Final Thoughts

Save your money and your dignity. Quality clothing doesn’t have to break the bank, but Amazon’s fast fashion isn’t your friend. Before you click “add to cart,” check out the materials it’s made with. Look for natural fibers like cotton or linen. Instead of paying attention to only the five-star reviews on an item, look at the one- to three-star reviews as well to form a well-rounded viewpoint.

Ultimately, investing a little more in the staple pieces in your wardrobe will save you money in the long run.

Editor’s note: Pricing and availability may vary depending on location.
