Another diary, another teenage girl. This adventurous Australian indie film is framed as the confessional video of 16-year-old Billie as she records her changing relationship with a mother (Del Herbert-Jane) undergoing sex reassignment surgery. It takes place over a year, and director Sophie Hyde filmed it chronologically, one Tuesday per week. This fragmented approach makes for hiccups and repetitions, but overall the device pays off invigoratingly. A sometimes earnest tone, and uneven acting, makes 52 Tuesdays sometimes feel more like a consciousness-raising project than a drama proper, but there’s a candid urgency to it, and an engaging, mercurial lead from Tilda Cobham-Hervey as Billie.
