500,000 deadly tumble driers still at large and in people's homes

I have been campaigning for the past four years for Whirlpool to recall all the dangerous tumble dryers sold between 2004 and 2015.

Instead, Whirlpool simply issued a “warning” that the machines “may” be dangerous and started a snail-pace programme of modifying and replacing the affected machines.

In fact, it has been so slow that there are still at least 500,000 machines sat in consumers’ houses posing a very real fire risk.

I’m therefore delighted to report that, at last, the Government has agreed to step in and issue an unprecedented recall notice for all 500,000 of the dangerous tumble dryers still in existence.

If you have one of these machines here’s what you need to know.

  • Is my machine affected? If you own a Hotpoint, Indesit, Creda, Proline or Swan Tumble dryer and it was manufactured between 2004 and 2015 it is likely to be affected.

You should log on the website for the brand and use their model number search for confirmation.

  • What is a recall notice? This is the most severe level of safety notice and it requires the manufacturer to recall all affected goods. Whirlpool therefore now have a legal obligation to take your affected tumble dryer back.

  • What are my rights? If you have one of the affected machines it is clearly faulty, meaning that you will be entitled to a refund or exchange. Whirlpool may claim that they have the right to repair – or in this case “modify” – your machine.

However, I do not accept this as it is widely considered that the modifications that they have done are not adequate, because the machines are still dangerous.

  • What should I do next? If you have an affected machine – or even if you have a machines that Whirlpool has modified – unplug it, contact the re

tailer you purchased it from and demand a full refund.
