5 SUVs That Will Break Down More Than Any Other Car On The Road

Buying an SUV should mean reliability, comfort, and confidence on the road. But some models carry a hidden cost: frequent breakdowns and expensive repairs, instantly turning your “happy drive” into a headache. In this article, we highlight five unreliable SUVs notorious for recurring issues and owner frustration. By learning which ones to avoid, you’ll save money, stress, and maybe even your safety on the road. Here’s what you need to know before signing that purchase agreement.

Why These Unreliable SUVs Might Cost You More Than Gas

1. Volkswagen Tiguan

Volkswagen Tiguan consistently ranks among the unreliable SUVs to steer clear of, according to auto discussions and owner complaints. TorqueNews describes the Tiguan as suffering from “DSG transmission problems, and high maintenance costs.” Reddit owners of the VW Atlas—a Tiguan’s sibling platform—report frequent recalls and “spotty” reliability records, and the Tiguan shares many of the same components. Expensive German parts and inconsistent dealer service add to ownership woes. If you don’t want surprise repair bills, this SUV is best avoided.

2. Ford Explorer

Ford Explorer makes headlines not for adventure, but for unreliability, especially in newer model years. TorqueNews again flags the Explorer for “mixed reliability,” with frequent mechanical and powertrain concerns. J.D. Power notes an industry-wide spike in problems, overwhelming even the Explorer’s best models. Multiple recalls and repair orders for transmission and engine issues don’t help its reputation. For a family-friendly SUV, these consistent failures make the Explorer a risky choice.

3. Jeep Cherokee (KL; 2014–2015)

The 2014–2015 Jeep Cherokee is infamous for severe transmission and software issues. The 9-speed ZF automatic transmission was especially problematic, prompting recalls and “snap ring” durability fixes. Some owners also report hacking vulnerabilities in the Uconnect infotainment software. Add to that Chrysler’s multiple software patches and transmission complaints, and you’ve got a recipe for unreliability. Owners on Reddit and service forums agree: the Cherokee’s issues are persistent and pricey to fix.

4. Nissan Rogue

Though popular, the Nissan Rogue has earned its place among unreliable SUVs because of persistent powertrain and electrical problems. A mechanic’s evaluation of 50,000 vehicles flagged it for CVT transmission failures and electrical issues that “end up in the junkyard” sooner than expected. Moreover, the 2022 Rogue’s VC-Turbo engine has been under NHTSA investigation for sudden engine failure, loss of power, and bearing damage. If you plan to drive it beyond the warranty, be prepared for a risky maintenance gamble.

5. Range Rover Evoque PHEV

Luxury means little when you’re in the shop more than your driveway. The Range Rover Evoque Plug-in Hybrid is repeatedly criticized for electrical faults and long wait times for replacement parts. A Which? survey found the Evoque PHEV spends an average of 21 days off the road annually, more than any other tested model. Despite strong off-road capabilities, hybrid and electric issues plague its reliability. If you value uptime, skip this one in favor of a more dependable ride.

One Common Thread: Choose Reliability Over Hype

These five unreliable SUVs share something important: they look good on paper until the bills and breakdowns arrive. From transmission failures to software bugs and engine defects, each has a track record that suggests caution. Consumer Reports, J.D. Power, mechanic testimonials, and owner forums all raise red flags. If you want an SUV that won’t leave you stranded, prioritize reliability data, not just features.

Drive Smart: Where Reliability Actually Matters

In a vehicle, what you can’t see often becomes painfully obvious when it breaks. Choosing one of these unreliable SUVs could cost you thousands in repairs and hours in shop time. Look instead for models with strong JD Power dependability scores, clean J.D. Power reports, or ones recommended by Reddit mechanics for low repair frequency. Toyota, Honda, and Mazda often top these lists, even in SUV lines. Before your next purchase, study the data and drive with confidence, not regret.
