Your bedroom paint ideas have more influence over how you feel than you might think, and certain colours can even make a stuffy room feel cooler. I’ll be clear: this is a psychological trick, and won't physically make the temperature drop.
While this year’s bedroom colour trends are on the cosy side rather than cool, paint experts say these are the five timeless shades that will trick your brain into thinking your bedroom is a calm, tranquil environment.
1. Blue-greens
Blue-greens such as teal and turquoise can help make your bedroom feel cooler as they are fresh, cool-toned colourways. Turquoise is having a revival this year, making it a perfect choice if you want your bedroom to look on-trend, too.
‘Blue-greens are a good choice for bedrooms that need to feel calm but not cold. They have the freshness of blue, with the softness of green, so they can make a room feel cooler while still feeling comfortable. These shades work well in south-facing bedrooms where the light can feel quite warm during the day,’ says Cathryn Sanders, head of creative at Earthborn.
2. Blue
Blue hues have been massively popular in 2026; one trending shade that will dominate autumn, too. Again, this is an excellent choice for stylish people who want their bedrooms to feel cooler.
‘Blue is the one I reach for first. We link it to water, sky and shade, so your brain reads a blue room as cooler than it actually is. Go for a soft, chalky blue rather than a bright primary, something like Farrow & Ball’s Borrowed Light, so the space feels breezy rather than cold,’ says Lisa Hensby, founder and creative director of Lisa Hensby Design & Build Studio.
3. Sage green
Who doesn’t love a sage green bedroom idea? It is one of the most popular bedroom colourways, largely due to its beautiful, calming look. But because of its cooler undertones, it can also help make a stuffy room feel cooler.
‘Green is a useful bedroom colour because it feels connected to nature. A soft sage or grey-green can help take the heat out of a room visually, without making the space feel stark. Shades such as Gregory’s Den or Sapling work well because they sit quietly in the background and are easy to pair with light neutrals, linen and wood,’ says Cathryn.
4. Off-white
White bedroom ideas are a classic choice, but opting for an off-white, especially if it has a grey undertone, can help make the room feel cooler.
‘If you'd rather stay neutral, choose an off-white or grey with a cool undertone rather than a warm, yellow-based one. Cool undertones bounce the light around and keep the room feeling airy and open, where warm neutrals will cosy it up,’ says Lisa.
5. Pale lilac and greyed pinks
If you want something more feminine, or don’t want to sacrifice pretty colour in your bedroom, some purple and pink colourways can have a cooling effect, whilst allowing your interior’s style to shine.
‘Pale lilac, grey-pink and soft mauve tones can also help a bedroom feel cooler because they have a gentle blue or grey undertone. These colours are useful if you want something softer than blue, but still want to avoid warmer shades such as yellow, orange or terracotta,’ says Cathryn.
