5 Major Fashion Trends We Saw Everywhere During Fashion Month You Can Try RN

Another year, another big month of fashion done and dusted. The second half of September and the beginning of October saw the world’s biggest designers take on New York, London, Milan and Paris — a marathon of models, runways, high fashion and glamour.

Each city delivered its own take on what’s next in fashion. New York set the tone with its effortless cool and streetwear edge, London followed with creative experimentation, Milan brought back unapologetic glamour, and Paris sealed the deal with its signature sophistication.

And while London, New York, Paris and Milan all have a uniqueness to them, there are always a few key trends and themes we see strutting down multiple runways. From bourgeoisie core to maximalism, five trends stuck out and are already shaping up to define what we’ll all be wearing (and seeing all over our feeds).

Let’s get into it, shall we?

1. Preppy Core

Blair Waldorf would be thrilled to hear that rich girl, preppy core is more alive and well than ever. However, she might not love that instead of ruffly blouses, it’s polos that designers are choosing to pair with skirts. At Tory Burch in New York, models walked the runway in casual polo tops and low slung belted midi skirts. During London Fashion Week Toga showcased its own spin on the look, with simple coloured polos matched with dramatic mini skirts.

Lucky for us, polos aren’t anything new, so there are already plenty of options out there for you to play around with styling.

2. Colour Galore

Gone are the days of the ‘vanilla girl’ and beige aesthetic — colour is back, baby. And we’re not restricting ourselves to a single palette because nothing is off limits! The more colour, the better. Michael Kors showcased a lot of pink on its runway during New York Fashion Week, Bottega Veneta opted for orange during Milan Fashion Week, and Miu Miu and Loewe fully sent it in colour blocking mode for Paris Fashion Week.

You don’t have to take out a small loan to get a designer piece if you want to start wearing colour. Some of our favourite affordable colourful brands include Vrg Grl, Damson Madder, Gorman, and Variety Hour.

3. Waist Accessories

Whether it’s chunky boho belts or a good ol’ peplum, decorated waists are making a mighty resurgence. Anna Sui’s NYFW runway had no shortage of statement belts, and as for Paris Fashion Week? They were absolutely everywhere. Andreas Kronthaler for Vivienne Westwood, Vaquera, Rabanne, Celine and Pierre Cardin were just some of the designers who cinched their collections with bold, waist-defining accents.

4. Head Scarves

A quick scroll of Instagram or Pinterest will confirm that scarves are back in a big way. Now, they’re working their way up the body, not to our necks, but to our heads. Designers like Calvin Klein and Kallmeyer embraced the trend at New York Fashion Week, and Giuseppe Di Morabito was leading the charge at Milan Fashion Week. Now I’ve gotta go and dig out the milkmaid scarves I made during Covid.

5. Reimagined Trench Coats

Trench coats are a timeless staple, but they received a well-deserved glow up this fashion month. Gone are the classic neutral ankle grazers. In its place are some pretty sick takes on the classic, including crimson red (Ralph Lauren, NYFW), boxy cropped editions (Victoria Beckham, Paris Fashion Week) and leather funnel-neck numbers (Magda Butrym, Paris Fashion Week). I know we’re rolling into summer RN, but this is making me super excited for autumn fashion.

From the looks of things, we’re heading into a maximalist era — and I can’t wait to see it!
