5 Liverpool players who could save Jurgen Klopp millions after Cody Gakpo admission

Liverpool made their first signing of the January transfer window by agreeing a deal for PSV Eindhoven's Cody Gakpo on Wednesday.

Reds fans will be delighted with the transfer after the 23-year-old's blistering start to the season. The Netherlands international, who found the net three times at the World Cup in Qatar, has scored nine goals and provided 12 assists in the Eredivisie this season.

Gakpo's signing is undoubtedly good news, although it means Liverpool may not be able to break the bank again in January. Jurgen Klopp confirmed on Thursday: "The money you spend has an impact on the money you can spend [in the future].

"It’s not that it increases it. It has nothing to do with each other. We know what we want to do and we will see if we can do it.

"It’s about money, of course, but it’s more about how it always was – about the right players as we are really happy that we could get Cody. He is a young player with a lot of potential."

As such, Klopp may need to call on Liverpool's youngsters to be successful. Here, Mirror Football takes a look at five emerging talents who could inspire the Reds to glory.

Ben Doak

Which Liverpool youngster do you think should get the nod? Let us know in the comments below!

The Scotland youth international hit the headlines on Boxing Day after making his Premier League debut in the 3-1 away win against Aston Villa. Doak, who celebrated his 17th birthday in November, has become the youngest Scottish player to appear in the division.

Doak is a right-back by trade but is renowned for his attacking attributes. That's good news for Klopp, as first-choice star Trent Alexander-Arnold is arguably the best attacking right-back on the planet. He could replace the Englishman if injury strikes.

Klopp certainly isn't the type of manager to worry about throwing a young right-back in at the deep end. He famously gave Alexander-Arnold his chance in that position as a teenager - allowing the homegrown talent to establish himself as a Reds icon.

Calvin Ramsay

Speaking of Scottish right-backs, Ramsay is another candidate to replace Alexander-Arnold should he become unavailable. The 19-year-old defender joined Liverpool from Aberdeen in June and was forced to wait until November for his debut due to an injury.

Ramsay's talent was undeniable during his time at Aberdeen. He played 33 games in all competitions last season to be named the Scottish Football Writers' Association's Young Player of the Year - an award previously won by the likes of Kieran Tierney.

Bobby Clark

Central midfield has been one of Klopp's biggest headaches in recent months due to injury problems and the advancing years of the likes of Thiago Alcantara, Jordan Henderson, Fabinho, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Naby Keita and James Milner.

Jude Bellingham and Enzo Fernandez have been identified as long-term successors, but Liverpool's restricted budget means Klopp may have to give a youngster a chance. Bobby Clark, the son of former Premier League star Lee, could be that player.

Clark, 17, has already made his Premier League debut and showed what he could do in the 4-1 friendly win against AC Milan in December, playing an unbelievable pass to assist Darwin Nunez. That has only amplified calls for Clark to get a chance in the first team.

On that pass, Klopp said: "When you see what Bobby did with the pass for Darwin... and then Darwin scores twice, so really nice obviously."

Stefan Bajcetic

Another central midfield candidate is Bajcetic, who scored during the win against Villa. The Spain youth international, 18, has become the third youngest player to score in the Premier League for Liverpool after Michael Owen and Raheem Sterling. Not bad company.

Klopp told Amazon Prime Video: "He's cheeky as hell and is not worried about anything. He just plays football and he can do that exceptionally well. He had a football-playing father [Srdan Bajcetic] so the genes are there but also the attitude, awareness and match intelligence. It's a big pleasure to work with these boys."

Bajcetic also impressed in the friendly against Milan, along with Doak and Clark. Speaking after that win, Klopp said: "In these 10, 11 days, the kids especially, everybody made a real step forward. That's why these things are so important, that we can involve them."

Melkamu Frauendorf

Frauendorf was another player to catch the eye against Milan and is closing in on a Premier League debut. The former Hoffenheim youngster, 18, has already made his senior bow after coming on during an FA Cup win against Shrewsbury last January.

Klopp also gave minutes to Dominic Corness - a 19-year-old midfielder born and raised in Liverpool - and Jake Cain - a 21-year-old midfielder who spent last season on loan at Newport - against Milan. Liverpool's academy is providing Klopp with options.

Klopp added: "It's absolutely cool. I'm not sure the Academy could watch the game tonight but when you see these boys and performing in a game like this, it's cool. It's a real physical game, adult football is a physical game and the boys need to make these steps [so] they can get ready for it step by step.

"How I said, the physical part will come but until you are not that strong, you can create a lot of ideas, you can do things a bit smarter."

The challenge now will be for one of these youngsters to break into the first team and persuade Klopp and Liverpool's transfer gurus not to spend more cash when it becomes available next summer. That's a big challenge - but one that's been conquered before. Just ask the likes of Sterling, Owen and current Reds superstar Alexander-Arnold.
