5 free-agent wide receivers the Steelers could sign to replace Antonio Brown

Joe Nicholson-USA TODAY Sports

In just a couple of days, there is a real possibility the Pittsburgh Steelers will have traded wide receiver Antonio Brown to another team. This should give the Steelers a high draft pick to help bolster the defense but it will leave quite a gap on the offensive side of the football. Rather than turn right around and use the pick for a new wide receiver, the Steelers could hand the reins over the JuJu Smith-Schuster and sign a veteran free agent to help fill out the depth chart.

Here are five guys the Steelers could consider.

Chris Conley | Kansas City Chiefs

When it comes to production, Chris Conley isn’t going to wow anyone. But Conley is incredibly fast and a willing blocker. These things alone should enough to get the Steelers interested. If there’s a quarterback who can get the most out of Conley’s physical tools it would be Ben Roethlisberger.

Another guy with tons of raw talent but has never been able to put it all together on the field is Donte Moncrief. He had 48 receptions last season but on 89 targets. His athleticism is elite and is worth a look if he can be more consistent with his routes and his hands.

Randall Cobb | Green Bay Packers

Jeff Hanisch-USA TODAY Sports

Despite playing with Aaron Rodgers, the last three seasons haven’t been what we thought we’d see from Randall Cobb. Injuries have played a role but there’s also been some disconnect in that offense. You go back to 2014 and 2015 you get a good look at what the 28-year old wide receiver is capable of in the right system. Pittsburgh could be the right system.

John Brown | Baltimore Ravens

Tommy Gilligan-USA TODAY Sports

Speed, speed and more speed. John Brown is one of those rare players in the league who can pull the top off a secondary on deep routes. He’s evolved as a route runner since coming into the league but his lack of durability will always limit his production. Pittsburgh needs a deep threat and there might not be a better one in free agency than the former small-school star.

Jamison Crowder | Washington Redskins

Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

At only 25 years old, the best is yet to come for Jamison Crowder. His resume is somewhat limited, largely because of the quarterbacks he’s had throwing him the football. An ankle injury cost him seven games in 2018 but the skills are there. Looking longterm, Crowder might be the most interesting guy on this list.
