49ers WR Brandon Aiyuk tags Steelers HC Mike Tomlin in rare tweet

San Fransisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk posted a rare tweet on X this afternoon, tagging Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin:

“@CoachTomlin they saying we twins. What do you think?”

What does it all mean? It could just mean they look alike. But given all the chatter surrounding Aiyuk to the Steelers, he could just be having at the expense of Steelers fans itching for a splashy wide receiver signing.

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Gerry Dulac recently teased that the Steelers could be in the process of bringing in a “bigger” weapon than Mike Williams, whom the team is meeting with this week.

If Omar Khan and Tomlin do choose to trade for Aiyuk, it would be another stunning move, but something they’ve been known for this offseason.

The twice-thousand-yard receiver is currently set to play on his $14 million fifth-year option in 2024, but to be more than a one-year rental, he’d require an extension. According to Spotrac, his projected market value is $24 million annually.

As cunning as Khan has been this offseason, it will take a lot to pry Aiyuk from the 49ers, including next month’s first-rounder. With all the needs along the offensive line and the run-heavy offense that Arthur Smith is cooking up, acquiring Aiyuk doesn’t seem like it would be in their best interest.

Of course, unless the Steelers package something involving George Pickens and draft a receiver in the mid-rounds.

Crazier things have happened.
