49ers sign DL with one roster spot open

The 49ers on Wednesday announced the signing of former Cardinals and Dolphins defensive lineman Cameron Malveaux. There’s no need for a corresponding move with linebacker Fred Warner on the reserve/COVID-19 list.

Malveaux joined the NFL with the Dolphins as an undrafted rookie in 2017. He played in four games as a rookie and five more with Miami in his second year before making his way to Arizona and notching four games. In 13 games he has 15 tackles, two quarterback hits, two sacks and a pass breakup.

Washington signed Malveaux in December, but waived him in early August. The 49ers have been banged up on the defensive front so Malveaux will take some snaps in practice until Warner returns. If he plays well in a trial run he may be able to stick on the roster and earn a practice squad spot.

This follows a trend for San Francisco of signing players familiar with 49ers defensive line coach Kris Kocurek, who was the Dolphins’ defensive line coach in 2018 during Malveaux’s second season in South Beach.
