49ers promote SS Marcell Harris, release DB Antone Exum Jr.

The 49ers made an addition to their secondary ahead of their Week 5 matchup with the Cleveland Browns. They announced the promotion of second-year safety Marcell Harris from the practice squad. Veteran safety Antone Exum Jr. was released in a corresponding move.

Harris had an up-and-down rookie season where he started five games and played in eight. His 2019 preseason didn’t go well enough to earn him a spot on the active roster, and he was released on final roster cuts. San Francisco re-added him to their practice squad. He adds depth at strong safety behind Jaquiski Tartt and gives them a good special teams option on coverage units.

Exum was also released on final roster cuts and re-added to the club immediately after. He played mostly on special teams in the 49ers’ three games, but he did see 15 snaps late in the blowout win over the Bengals in Week 2.

Harris was a sixth-round pick in 2018 and could work his way into a long-term role in the secondary if he puts together a good showing this season.
