49ers make roster moves ahead of reported Sebastian Joseph-Day signing

The 49ers on Tuesday announced a couple roster moves that will clear the way for a couple of reported signings that haven’t been made official yet.

San Francisco on Monday before their game against the Ravens released offensive lineman Matt Pryor, and promoted wide receiver Willie Snead IV to the active roster.

Now Snead has been waived, a practice squad player has been released, and the team is expected to bring Pryor back with a free agent defensive tackle set to sign ahead of Week 17.

Here’s how the roster moves shook out:

Waived: WR Willie Snead IV

Snead was waived by San Francisco on Tuesday after being promoted to the active roster Monday. He played 25 offensive snaps and caught one of his two targets for five yards. There’s a strong chance he re-signs with the 49ers practice squad if he clears waivers.

This move is official.

Released: DT Taylor Stallworth

Stallworth signed with the 49ers’ practice squad ahead of Week 16, but he was let go before Week 17. There are still interior DL issues for San Francisco, but a reported free agent signing along with Javon Hargrave’s return made Stallworth expendable.

This move is official.

Signing: DT Sebastian Joseph-Day

The Chargers released Joseph-Day in the lead up to Week 16 after he started 30 games for them across the last two seasons. He is expected to sign with the 49ers according to NFL Media’s Jason McCourty. Matt Barrows of the Athletic confirmed the signing.

Joseph-Day will give the 49ers a starting-caliber DT to play alongside Hargrave while Arik Armstead works through knee and foot injuries. He has 11.0 sacks and 21 tackles for loss in 69 games (68 starts) in his career that includes three seasons with the Rams and two with with Chargers.

This deal is not official.

Re-signing: OL Matt Pryor

Barrows also reported the 49ers are expected to re-sign Pryor after releasing him Monday. They have a ton of injury problems on the offensive front and Pryor can play multiple spots so having him as a depth piece (and potential starter) makes a lot of sense.
