49ers-Chargers: 3 things that stood out in the 3rd quarter

A Robbie Gould field goal was the only tally in the third quarter as the 49ers trail the Chargers 20-17 heading into the fourth.

Here’s what stood out in the third quarter:

Nick Mullens gets playing time

With CJ Beathard playing the entire first half, it was expected that Mullens would have the night off. He started the second half for the offense and played one series. He completed one of his three passes for 13 yards. Wilton Speight took over the quarterback spot for the second drive of the quarter.

Jeff Wilson Jr. fumbles

In the midst of a fantastic game where he had 20 carries for 100 yards including a 41-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, Wilson fumbled the ball on the first play of the second half. Holding onto the ball was an issue for Wilson last season. He fumbled three times in six games. While the 49ers recovered, carrying the ball is something the hard-running Wilson needs to improve on.

A second interception on the preseason

Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles intercepted an Easton Stick pass late in the third quarter. Flannigan-Fowles was playing at safety, replacing Adrian Colbert who left the game with a hamstring injury. The interception was the second of the preseason for the defense. Dontae Johnson had the first against Denver in Week 2.

It’s something of an improvement as the 49ers finished with just two interceptions over the entire 2018 season.
