4 years on, panel fines South Central Railway Rs 5,000 for faulty AC, agony on train

HYDERABAD: Four years after an agonising train ride, a railway passenger was awarded Rs 5,000 compensation for faulty air-conditioning by the Kakinada consumer commission which also asked the South Central Railway (SCR) to return the fare of Rs 1,540 and pay Rs 2,000 towards litigation cost.

Dwara Mahadev (63), an advocate and a resident of Kakinada, filed the complaint against the general manager, SCR, Secunderabad, alleging that their bogie (B-8) in Coconada Express was in a bad condition and that the AC was not functioning. Mahadev along with his wife had travelled to Kakinada from Secunderabad on May 11, 2018.

The commission, after hearing both sides, said that why would a sane, senior citizen like Mahadev complain about the bogie’s bad condition unless there was a genuine complaint. It also pointed out Mahadev’s futile search for the TTE and attender throughout the night and his sleepless night having spent a high fare for a comfortable journey.

After going through the evidences, the commission confirmed the lapses and penalised SCR for causing mental agony to the passenger.
