The Seattle Seahawks had their rookie class report a week early to training camp this year, in an effort to get them extra prepared for their first NFL season.
However, five of Seattle’s rookies won’t get to do much for the time being. Marquise Blair, Ben Burr-Kirven, DeMarcus Christmas and Phil Haynes were all placed on the reserve/physically unable to perform (PUP) list, while guard Demetrius Knox was placed on the reserve/non-football injury list.
Unlike in the regular season, players are eligible to be taken off the PUP list at any time during training camp and the preseason.
This news shouldn’t come as a surprise for Blair or Burr-Kirven. Blair had been battling a hamstring injury during mandatory minicamp in June, and Burr-Kirven has barely participated this year while he recovered from sports hernia surgery.
Less is known about the injuries to Haynes or Christmas, but again the Seahawks can remove them from the PUP list at any time, so it’s entirely possible these injuries are not serious.
Knox, who has been battling a Lisfranc injury since his time at Ohio State, hardly participated with the Seahawks after they signed him as an undrafted free agent. It will be a long road for him to make the Seahawks roster this season, and the longer he takes to return from his injury the dimmer his roster chances become.
The rest of the team will report to training camp on Wednesday, July 24 with practice set to start the following day.
