More than 32,000 houses were flooded by the heavy rain that hit western Japan early this month.

According to data compiled by the Internal Affairs and Communications Ministry's Fire and Disaster Management Agency (FDMA) on Wednesday, 13,981 houses were flooded above the floor, many of them in Okayama and Ehime prefectures, where rivers burst their banks.

A total of 926 houses and buildings were either destroyed or heavily damaged by landslides.

As of noon Wednesday, 217 people had died in 13 prefectures, according to data compiled by The Yomiuri Shimbun. Fourteen people were still missing in four prefectures, including Hiroshima and Okayama. Search operations were continuing in those areas.

According to the FDMA, 4,728 people were staying at evacuation centers in 16 prefectures.

Water outages were suffered by 260,000 households at one time, and 69,000 houses in Hiroshima, Okayama and Ehime prefectures were still without running water, although service is being restored in stages.
