30 year old Albert Dock store selling 'the most beautiful homemade fudge I've ever eaten' - review

A little blink-and-you'll-miss-it store on the Albert Dock sells the most incredible fudge I've ever eaten.

Roly's Fudge is a quaint shop, nestled among other independent retailers and chain restaurants, and it boasts impressive views of Liverpool's beautiful dock and peaceful waters. It was founded more than 30 years ago, and has amassed a firm reputation for its beautiful, decadent, handmade fudge.

The venture is an independent business, founded by owner and retailer Greg Bresland. There's now 40 Roly's Fudge Pantries in England, including two in York and Bakewell. Its Albert Dock site - the company's 40th - is an impressive venture, with the creators only using high quality and carefully sourced ingredients, all as part of efforts to maintain zero food waste.

All the fudge made at Roly's Albert Dock store is made on site, in full view of visitors. The brand's recipe has bagged awards over the decades and, after sampling the products for myself, it's easy to see why.

There's shelves and shelves offering flavours like traditional vanilla clotted cream, sea salt, chocolate, peanut butter, butterscotch and more. I opted to try the sea salt and chocolate flavours, and I was not prepared for just how delicious Roly's fudge is.

Sweet treats, as indulgent and enjoyable as the vast majority are, become quite sickly, quite quickly in my opinion. This is not the case with Roly's. Perhaps it's the addition of the sea salt, and the depth of the cocoa flavour in the chocolate bag, but I had to stop myself from polishing off the entirety of both bags in one sitting.

The chocolate fudge manages to be creamy and crumbly, with a deliciously rich cocoa aftertaste. The sea salt is the perfect balance of sweetness, with an addictive yet subtly savoury undercurrent.

Somewhat embarrassingly, I must confess the photos I took for this review are the only three pieces of fudge I had left by the time I'd walked home. I love this fudge so much that I daren't buy it on a regular basis - all sense of self control seems to vanish completely the second I open the packaging.

If you've yet to try Roly's Fudge, I wholeheartedly recommend it. For more information about the flavours on offer, or to order online, click here. Roly's Fudge is based at Unit 17, The Colonnades, The Royal Albert Dock, Liverpool, L3 4AA.
