TAKATSUKI, Osaka -- Friday marked three years since an earthquake measuring lower 6 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale killed six people, including quake-associated deaths, and damaged more than 60,000 houses in northern Osaka Prefecture.
One of the victims was a 9-year-old girl, who was crushed to death on her way to school when a concrete block wall at the school toppled in the tremor. At her school, Juei Elementary School, mourners prayed for her soul on Friday.
Flowers were placed on a stand set up in front of the school's main entrance in the morning, and students and neighborhood residents joined their hands in prayer.
Takatsuki Mayor Takeshi Hamada, along with others, offered a silent prayer at 7:58 a.m., the time when the quake occurred three years ago.
"We will never forget the accident and make every effort to create safe and secure schools," Juei Elementary Principal Mie Sato said.
