3-year-old fatally shot in Fort Worth home

FORT WORTH, Texas _ Police are investigating a shooting that left a 3-year-old dead inside a home Wednesday night.

The Tarrant County Medical Examiner's office identified the shooting victim Thursday as Jonnie Colon. He was pronounced dead just before 10 p.m. Wednesday.

Fort Worth police responded to a shooting call at about 9:45 p.m. Wednesday at a house in the 3900 block of Lawnwood Street, in the Riverside neighborhood near the intersection of Beach and East 1st streets.

Family members told police that the 3-year-old boy grabbed a shotgun and shot himself in the head. He was in a back bedroom of the home when the shooting took place.

According to the medical examiner's records, the home where Colon was shot was not his residence.

Police told Star-Telegram media partner WFAA that both adults and children were inside the house at the time of the shooting.

Homicide detectives were investigating early Thursday, trying to determine if the shooting was accidental, or if it was something more.

No arrests have been made.
