3 things to know about Colts’ Parris Campbell

The Indianapolis Colts used the No. 59 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft to grab an electric wide receiver in the form of Parris Campbell.

The Colts had a need a wide receiver entering the draft given how many questions there are in the room. Campbell isn’t an immediate solution, but he should fit exactly what the Colts want to do offensively.

Here are three things to know about the Colts’ new wide receiver:

Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports

Career at Ohio State

The former Buckeye entered college and redshirted his freshman season and didn’t make a massive impact until his fifth year. But when he did make an impact, it was huge. He finished the season catching 90 passes for 1,263 yards and 12 touchdowns.

Campbell’s game is largely based on his ability to make things happen after the catch. He’s extremely effective with the ball in his hands in open space and is one of the reasons why the passing game for Ohio State was so efficient in 2018.

Perfect fit for the Colts offense

Campbell’s game perfectly fits with what the Colts like to do offensively. They struggled mightily with creating yards after the catch, but Campbell should be able to come in and make a massive impact in that department.

Though he will likely be used mostly in the slot, Campbell will work perfectly as a horizontal target for Andrew Luck to get the ball to quickly after the snap. His 4.31 in the 40-yard dash shows up constantly as he’s able to pull away from defenders with ease.

Working with the offensive genius of Frank Reich and the efficiency of Andrew Luck, Campbell should find success often.

Entering the WR room

As it stands right now, the Colts have a lot of questions in the wide receiver room. There is a lot of upside with the addition of Devin Funchess and the return of Deon Cain from his ACL surgery. Now, Campbell enters the mix with a chance to carve out a role for himself.

It isn’t clear if the Colts want him to work on the outside, but Campbell is a weapon from the slot and should be able to make an impact as a depth piece early while working his way up the roster.

Campbell is a perfect fit for the Colts offense and given the current state of the wide receiver room, he has a chance to make an impact early if he can get off to a hot start.
