The NFL draft might be over but the work isn’t done for the Pittsburgh Steelers. We are less than 90 days from preseason football and this means every team has to begin the process of fine-tuning the roster. Most would agree the Steelers had a strong draft and filled several key needs. But this doesn’t mean there aren’t still ways to make this team better before training camp.
Here are three free agents the Steelers could get on the cheap to consider.
Maxx Williams, tight end
With all due respect to Zach Gentry and Xavier Grimble, the Steelers tight end depth chart could be much better. And if the team feels like there’s potential in a player like Gentry, Maxx Williams must look like an All-Pro. Williams never got a shot with the Baltimore Ravens because of the number of tight ends on the roster and the Ravens’ scheme but Williams’ got excellent potential as a pass catcher.
Tre Boston, safety

Despite only being 26 years old and having back-to-back impressive seasons, Boston finds himself a free agent again. The Steelers should have signed Boston last offseason instead of Morgan Burnett but they can correct the mistake this time around. Boston would fit perfectly with Sean Davis and Terrell Edmunds in their three-safety rotation.
Shane Ray, edge

No one is looking for Ray to be a dominant edge rusher. But after seeing him get eight sacks in 2016, you have to think there’s some good football in him at only 25 years old. If the Steelers could get him on a one-year deal to prove himself, they could have their third edge rusher.
