3 dead, 8 wounded in Chicago shootings

June 02--Three people, including a 16-year-old boy, were killed and eight people, including a 14-year-old boy, have been wounded in shootings Wednesday in Chicago, police said.

A 19-year-old man died after getting shot outside a store about 9 p.m. in the West Rogers Park neighborhood on the Far North Side, police said.

The man was sitting in a parked vehicle outside Devon Food Liquor Party store in the 3000 block of West Devon Avenue when an unknown gunman walked out of the store and fired shots at him, said Officer Hector Alfaro, a police spokesman.

The man suffered gunshot wounds to his chest area. He was taken in critical condition to Presence St. Francis Hospital. He later was pronounced dead at the hospital, Alfaro said.

Late Wednesday evening, police blocked off the parking lot of the liquor store with yellow and red tape. Inside the crime scene, a silver car was parked near the entrance of the store. The window of the car's rear passenger side door was shattered.

Half a dozen people stood across Devon, watching police work.

Mohamuud Mohamed, 31, nervously shifted from side to side, clutching a water bottle in his hands, as he stood on the sidewalk. He said he was inside the laundromat next door to the liquor store when he heard the gunshots.

His black car stood parked next to the silver car that was shot up inside the crime scene. He said police told him some bullets may have hit his car too.

Mohamed said his clothes were in the dryer and he was about to be done with his laundry when the shooting happened.

"I keep thinking ... what if I was exactly at the car at that time?" he said.

Earlier, a man died after being shot in the 2600 block of East 75th Street in the South Shore neighborhood, said Officer Michelle Tannehill, a police spokeswoman.

The man, whose age was not immediately available, was shot in the head at 5:05 p.m., police said. The victim was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The man was standing in an alley in the 6600 block of South Union Avenue when he heard gunshots and realized he was struck. He was hit in the left leg, and he was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where his condition stabilized, Alfaro said.

Five minutes earlier also in the Englewood neighborhood, about 11:25 p.m., a 14-year-old boy was wounded in a separate shooting, Alfaro said.

The boy was walking on the 5600 block of South Laflin Street when he heard gunshots and realized he was struck, Alfaro said.
