‘274 FBI agents’: Mike Johnson lectures on the rule of law, but retreats the moment Jake Tapper mentions Jan 6

United States House of Representatives Speaker Mike Johnson is showing his blatant support for US President Donald Trump despite evidence suggesting otherwise in the January 6 United States Capitol attacks case.

On Sunday, September 28, 2025, Johnson was interviewed by CNN’s Jake Tapper, where he spoke at length about the alleged government shutdown led by Trump. He also discussed about the importance of law and how it needs to apply to everyone. Speaking in the context of certain instances of the past, Johnson said:

“They have to hold people accountable. We have to ensure that the rule of law applies to everyone.”

While Johnson spoke about his views on the law, Tapper cross-questioned him and asked if the same applies to the people who had “stormed the Capitol on January 6,” referring to the attacks on the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C. Visibly taken aback, Johnson tried to divert the question by referring to theories that are yet to be confirmed. Without naming names, Johnson suggested that Biden’s government was involved in foul play by mentioning the presence of 274 FBI agents at the site.

However, this claim drew a rebuttal from Johnson, who cited clarification from the Director of the FBI, Kash Patel, who reported that the troops sent there were for crowd control. In this context, Johnson took a swipe at President Donald Trump, suggesting it wasn’t a “false flag.”

Following these comments from Tapper, Johnson attempted to double down on his comments and offered justification for his comments, further showing support for Trump and denying any kind of deceit. In the context of pending investigations into the January 6 Capitol attacks, Johnson mentioned that the FBI personnel who were there have been the focus of speculation surrounding the incident. He suggests that, based on the ongoing conversations, many believe that the people present in the crowd could have spurred the crowd or opened ‘the gates’ to allow them in.”
