2020 NFL Draft: The 5 best offensive tackles the Jets should target

This year’s NFL draft is loaded with elite offensive linemen, and there’s no doubt Joe Douglas is well aware.

This works out perfectly for New York, as it is in desperate need of a new starting offensive tackle. Douglas already filled one of the tackle positions by signing George Fant in free agency, but the draft is where the Jets will find their starter on the other side of the line.

So, which top tackles should the Jets target with the 11th pick? Let’s take a look at the best players to keep an eye on.

Tristan Wirfs, Iowa

Wirfs dominated the NFL draft combine, leading to his ascension as the consensus No. 1 offensive line prospect in his class.

Wirfs played mostly right tackle throughout his career Iowa but can line up at left tackle and at guard. His versatility, technique and athleticism give teams the option to play him mostly anywhere on the line with the expectation he will produce at an elite level.

It seems unlikely Wirfs slips to the Jets at No. 11, but if he does, Joe Douglas and company would be foolish to pass on him.

Jedrick Wills Jr., Alabama

Tristan Wirfs might be the best overall offensive lineman in this year’s draft class, but there is no doubt that Alabama’s Jedrick Wills Jr. is the top true offensive tackle on the board entering the draft.

Wills lined up at right tackle for Nick Saban at Alabama but has the athleticism to play left tackle as well. Throughout his career with the Crimson Tide, Wills showcased a skill set that proved he is ready to contribute on an NFL offensive line from day one.

Like Wirfs, it’s unlikely Wills makes it to the Jets at No. 11. If he does, New York needs to pounce.

Mekhi Becton, Louisville

There is only one word that appropriately describes Louisville offensive tackle Mekhi Becton: Beastly.

Standing at a massive 6-foot-7 and 364 pounds, Becton has rare athleticism and mobility for his size. His technique is still a work in progress, but that won’t cause any NFL team to shy away from drafting him.

With his size and athleticism, Becton has arguably the highest ceiling of any offensive lineman in this year’s draft class. He also comes with plenty of question marks regarding his ability to start in Week 1. Considering the Jets’ current offensive tackle situation, it’s worth their while to find out what Becton can bring to the table at the next level.

Andrew Thomas, Georgia

Thomas is not a freak athlete and does not have mammoth size. However, he has an extremely refined skillset and the poise to become an elite NFL offensive lineman.

Thomas is equally adept in run and pass coverage — a rarity for an offensive tackle coming out of college. He is just as valuable off the field as he is on it, as his demeanor and approach to playing the position make him a leader in the locker room from day one.

If the Jets miss out on Wirfs, Wills and Becton, don’t look at Thomas as a consolation prize. He is nothing short of rock-solid and, when it’s all said and done, could wind up being the best and most consistent offensive lineman to come out of this year’s draft.

Josh Jones, Houston

Jones’ stock has been on the rise since a strong showing against some of the best senior pass rushers in the country at the Senior Bowl, making him a viable choice for the Jets at No. 11 if the consensus top four offensive tackles are off the board.

Odds are New York could trade back and land Jones in the middle of the first round if it doesn’t want to reach at No. 11. Regardless of where he is picked, though, Jones has the ability and refinery to start for Gang Green right away.
