2019 NFL draft: Panthers meeting with QB Clayton Thorson again this week

The Panthers are showing legitimate interest in several quarterback prospects for the 2019 NFL draft. Even though the team has not picked a quarterback since Cam Newton eight years ago, speculation is they’ll add a backup at some point in this year’s class.

West Virginia’s Will Grier and Auburn’s Jarrett Stidham have gotten a lot of Carolina’s attention in the predraft process. They also have their eye on Northwestern’s Clayton Thorson, for whom they sent a contingent to watch his pro day and met with him separately as well. According to Tom Pelissero at NFL Network, the team is meeting with Thorson again this week.

Thorson (6-foot-4, 222 pounds) threw 61 touchdowns during his time as a four-year starter at Northwestern but also threw 45 picks and completed just 58.4 percent of his passes.

Lance Zeirlein at NFL.com says his best pro comparison is Packers QB DeShone Kizer. He’s projected to be a Day 3 pick.
