Rory McIlroy will lead a 2019 British Open lineup and hope to emulate his 2015 winning form the last time this competition was held in Northern Ireland. The Holywood native has the weight of expectations on his shoulders to impress among a heady field of competition.

McIlroy, 30, grew up about an hour south of this weekend’s tournament location, so it makes sense the Northern Irishman comes into the competition as odds leader at around 8/1.
Veterans Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, and Ernie Els are just some of those returning to the British Open as former champions. Meanwhile, 2017 winner Jordan Spieth, 25, and defending champion Francesco Molinari are also competing.
Despite that sea of talent, Brooks Koepka looks like the man to beat as of late after failing to finish outside the top two at the three showpiece events so far in 2019. His win at the PGA Championship in May brought him his fourth major crown in less than two years. Needless to say, the 29-year-old has found his rhythm at the top, but the links golf of Royal Portrush may yet offer up some unexpected challenges.
The last six British Open titles have been divided up equally between American and European victors, with no continent managing to produce successive winners during that spell. After Molinari took the trophy in Carnoustie, Scotland last year, that could pose as a precursor to suggest the Claret Jug is on its way back across the pond.
