A 14-year-old boy died after a Wednesday shootout in Chatham wounded two other 16-year-olds on the South Side.
A gunman in a vehicle opened fire on the teens as they traveled in another car about 5:10 p.m. in the 300 block of West 83rd Street, according to a Chicago police spokeswoman, who said people in both cars fired shots at each other.
The 14-year-old showed up at the University of Chicago Medical Center with a gunshot wound to his back and was pronounced dead, police said. The Cook County medical examiner’s office hasn’t released details on his death.
Two other boys, both 16 years old, were taken to the same hospital for treatment, police said.
Shortly after the shooting, the Chicago Fire Department said one of the boys was in “grave condition” with gunshot wounds to the leg and head, while the other was also shot in the back and was in serious-to-critical condition.
Chicago police said Thursday the other vehicle may have been a red Dodge Durango.
Police initially said the three boys were traveling in different vehicles.
