2,000 gallons of vegetable oil floods onto road

A main Merseyside road remains shut two days after a massive vegetable oil spillage.

Millers Bridge in Bootle is still shut 48 hours after vegetable oil was spilt across one side of the road. Sefton Council confirmed that the road will remain shut for part of Wednesday, June 8 despite workers being on scene since Monday afternoon, although the road is expected to open later today following cleaning and tests on the road.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that they were called to the road following reports of an oil spillage at 9.18am on Monday, June 6 with fire crews having to call Merseyside Police to assist with traffic management. The road was initially shut thanks to work from emergency services before the closure was handed over to Sefton Council.

A Sefton Council spokesperson told the ECHO: "The road has been cleaned and tests carried out, results of which are awaited. However, we expect the road to be open later today."

Traffic monitor Inrix said: "A5058 Balliol Road Eastbound closed due to emergency repairs from A565 Derby Road to A567 Stanley Road. Traffic is coping well. Closed since around 15:00 Monday (6th June) afternoon after 2000 gallons of cooking oil was spilled onto the road. Canal Street, Bridge Street and Oriel Road are also closed to prevent traffic from trying to get onto Baliol Road."

At the time of the oil spill, an MFRS spokesperson said: "Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service was called to Millers Bridge, Bootle, on Monday 6 June following reports of a spillage. Crews were alerted at 9.18am and on scene at 9.22am. One fire engine attended.

"On arrival crews found a large quantity of what is believed to be cooking oil spread across the roadway, along Miller Bridge from Derby Road to Oriel Road. Firefighters closed the roads and requested Merseyside Police to assist with traffic management.

"No further action was required by MFRS and fire crews left the scene at 11.14am. The incident was handed over to Sefton Council."
