It's fair to say that people from Northern Ireland have...how should we put it?...a way with words.

Whether it's insults, terms of endearment, or just seemingly random phrases that sound good on the tongue ("sure you know yourself"), we certainly have a unique way of speaking.

Here's a list 17 words and phrases that you always come across when speaking to people in Belfast. It's cracking, so it is:

1. Yer ma

A slur on the woman dearest to you.

2. Scundered

Embarrassed or mortified. “I was scundered when I told her I loved her but she just wanted to be friends."

3. Gutties/Guddies

A pair of trainers.

4. Millie

A class slur. Originated from women working in Linen Mills.

5. Smick

Like Millie, but for a young lad. Usually wearing tracksuit bottoms in town.

6. Geg

A laugh.

7. Peeler

A police officer.

8. Stickin' out

Very good indeed.

9. Themmuns

If you're 'ussuns', then they're 'themmuns'. You know the drill.

Something that’s beezer.

15. Go ahead

Go forth and fulfil your dreams. Eg, “Go ahead, big lad.”

A big man. Or a small man. Basically just any man.
