CHENNAI: After six days, Tamil Nadu reported one death due to Covid-19 from Cuddalore on Thursday, when seventeen districts in the state had no new Covid-19 cases and nine others had one case each. Tamil Nadu's fresh cases tally on Thursday was 70 and cumulative death toll since March 2020 touched 38,025.
At the end of the day, the state discharged 146 patients and there were 796 active cases of the viral infection.
Chennai reported 20 new cases - the highest in the state followed by Chengalpet (11). While Coimbatore reported five new cases, all other districts had fewer than five cases each. Thanjavur and Vellore had four new cases, followed by three each in Erode, Kanyakumari and Tuticorin. Kancheepuram, Krishnagiri, Tiruvallur and Thiruvannamalai reported two new cases. Dharmapuri, Kallakurichi, Namakkal, Nilgiris, Ramanathapuram, Salem, Tenkasi, Theni and Virudhunagar had one case each. All other districts reported no new cases.
On March 11, TN reported no new Covid deaths after nearly two years since April 30, 2020. Since then, the state added no deaths to its registry until Thursday. Health officials declared the death of a 78-years-old man from Cuddalore who died on Tuesday was due to Covid-pneumonia.
Ariyalur, Karur, Mayiladuthurai and Villupuram had no active cases. Of 277 active cases in Chennai, 37 are in hospitals. Overall 190 patients in the state are admitted for the viral infection, and among them, 20 people are in the ICU.
