$15bn Labor fund would be 'a win for Hunter'

Anthony Albanese

OPPOSITION Leader Anthony Albanese will on Tuesday unveil plans for a $15 billion National Reconstruction Fund.

Mr Albanese will use Labor's National Conference to spell out his vision for the fund, which has been described as a "win for the Hunter" by Shortland MP Pat Conroy.

He said the money would be allocated to "support investments which demonstrate they will grow the economy and increase employment".

The fund, which would provide $15 billion of investment through a combination of loans, equity, co-investment and guarantees, would be legislated and be governed by an independent board.

"Australia must be a country that makes things, to have our own industrial and manufacturing capabilities," Mr Albanese said.

In a trip to the Hunter in October last year, when he visited Varley's Carrington engineering workshop, Mr Albanese said he wanted rolling stock built in Australia.

"The trains we can see here were made in China, but they are being fixed up here in Newcastle. Wouldn't it be better if we got it right the first time and made them here rather than retro-fit them when they come here," he said at the time.

Mr Conroy said the National Reconstruction Fund would support "what the Hunter does best: clean tech, defence, rail, and medical".

"This is great news for Hunter manufacturers," he said.

"This investment by an Albanese Labor government will turbo charge the world class manufacturers we have in our region.

"Unlike the Coalition, Labor actually believes that Australian workers can build trains. This fund is a win for the Hunter."
