14 Irish celebrities and where they went to school - from Bono to Cillian Murphy to Conor McGregor

Ireland is well known for producing some of the greatest actors, singers, and sportspeople over the years.

While some have risen to the heights of fame that are unfathomable to the average Joe, there is one thing they have in common with the general public - they too had to traipse to school back in the day.

Just like every youngster, they would have been weighed down by schoolbags, oversized uniforms, and the general malaise of being a teenager.

Some of us may even have walked the school corridors with future presidents or world champions in our midst and didn’t even realise.

So, here's a list of the schools some of Ireland's most well-known celebrities once attended.

Katie Taylor

Katie Taylor is one of Ireland's greatest-ever sportspeople and is a two-weight world champion as well as the current undisputed lightweight champion.

The Olympic gold medalist attended St Kilian's Community School in Bray.

Liam Neeson

The Academy Award-winning actor, Liam Neeson, grew up in Ballymena in Co Antrim before landing himself in the centre of Hollywood.

He attended St Patrick's Secondary School, now St Patrick's College, in the town.

Bono

The U2 frontman's time in school changed the course of both his personal and professional life.

Paul Hewson, as he was known then, met his bandmates and his future wife, Ali Stewart, while attending Mount Temple Comprehensive School in Clontarf in Dublin.

One of Ireland's best-known exports attended Castleknock College, close to where he grew up in Dublin.

From there, he paved his way into the Hollywood scene, stopping off in Ballykissangel, Bruges, and Miami on his way.

Conor McGregor

The former UFC champion, Conor McGregor, grew up in Crumlin and attended Coláiste de Híde in Tallaght, Dublin.

It was here he developed his passion for sport, playing football and joining the Crumlin Boxing Club at the age of 12.

Ruth Negga

Golden Globe-nominated actress Ruth Negga was born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, but was raised in Limerick.

The Love/Hate and Loving star went to Scoil Carmel on O'Connell Avenue before going to Trinity to study drama.

Bob Geldof

Bob Geldof was born and bred in Dún Laoghaire and attended Blackrock College, where it is said he was bullied for being a poor rugby player.

His prowess on the pitch didn't matter when he rose to prominence in the Boomtown Rats and later organised the Live Aid and Live 8 concerts as part of his activism and charity work.

Jessie Buckley

Kerry-native Jessie Buckley first appeared on our screens in the BBC TV talent show I'd Do Anything, but she has since appeared in a slew of hit films and series including Wild Rose, I'm Thinking of Ending Things, and Chernobyl.

She attended the Ursuline Secondary School in Thurles, Co Tipperary where she first wowed audiences in the school shows.

Michael Fassbender

Also from the same county is Michael Fassbender who was born in Germany and moved to Killarney in Co Kerry at the age of two.

He attended St Brendan's College before going on to star in 12 Years A Slave, Inglourious Basterds, X-Men and Shame.

Cillian Murphy

Peaky Blinders star Cillian Murphy was educated at the Presentation Brothers College in Cork.

Last year he revealed the Leaving Cert caused him to be under huge amounts of pressure and that he used music as an escape.

Una Healy

Tipperary native and The Saturdays singer Una Healy attended the Presentation Secondary School in Thurles, Co Tipperary.

She achieved huge success with the girl group in the UK and has since returned to her hometown and can be seen as a presenter on national television.

Brendan Gleeson

The internationally acclaimed actor Brendan Gleeson received his second-level education at St Joseph's CBS in Fairview, Dublin.

It was here he first dipped his toe into the arts as a member of the school drama group, before going on to play iconic roles in the Harry Potter films, Braveheart, the Comey Rule, and The General, among many more.

Sinéad Burke

The writer and disability activist Sinéad Burke has been celebrated by none other than Vogue's Anna Wintour.

She attended Loreto Secondary School in Navan, Co Meath before training as a primary school teacher and subsequently trailblazing the fashion, media, and literary worlds.

Hozier

Hozier, one of Ireland's most iconic singer-songwriters, attended St Gerard’s school, a private secondary school in Bray, Co Wicklow.

He later described himself as a "class clown" and an "unfocused student," calling the school a "monotonous nightmare."
