13yo girl handed good behaviour bond for school stairwell assault

A young girl found guilty of violently assaulting another student at a school on the far south coast of New South Wales has been given a 12-month good behaviour bond.

The 13-year-old pleaded guilty to the attack on a year seven girl in a stairwell which was filmed by other students and uploaded to social media.

Bega Children's Court heard the girl threw the victim on to a concrete floor in a stairwell before punching her in the head and kicking her in the back.

Police say the victim suffered a severely swollen and bruised eye and a large lump with associated bruising to her forehead.

Magistrate David O'Connor found her guilty of assault occasioning bodily harm and intimidation.

An Apprehended Violence Order is in place for 12 months.

The incident prompted former students and parents to share their experiences of bulling at the school in Bega.

The school closed down a planned a strike by students wanting to address what they described as a "culture of bullying" following the hospitalisation of their classmate.

The ABC understands the Member for Bega, Andrew Constance, and Education Minister Rob Stokes have met with principals in the Bega Valley to discuss bullying.
