130 ill as diarrhoea ravages Ghazipur; Mohali DC seeks report

MOHALI: The health department and municipal council of Zirakpur got a case registered against unknown persons for digging the road carelessly, causing contamination of sewerage and drinking water pipelines. The Mohali DC has sought a detailed report on the issue.

The water contamination trigerred panic at Ghazipur, where around 130 persons fell ill and underwent treatment at a government hospital. No casualty was reported. Deputy commissioner (DC) Amit Talwar said he took an emergency meeting of the SDM, MC executive officers and public health officials along with health department officers on Monday. He directed them to examine the area critically and leave no stone unturned to trace any other contamination point.

He said that the contamination source detected has been plugged and the MC health department has been directed to supply drinking water from tankers till the department ensures that there is no other contamination point.

The DC said, "We have sought a complete report on the water contamination, its causes, corrective measures taken and why it happens repeatedly. We have also directed the SDM to ask the telecom company to produce papers for digging and the NoC taken before starting the work. The health department has been directed to make house to house visits to detect patients and distribute medicines as well as ORS to affected people." The DC said water samples have been taken and reports will be included in the enquiry to be conducted by the SDM. The team of State Lab Water Supply filled the samples. Mohali reported several major diarrhoea outbreaks in August and September, 2021.
