17 best retinol creams and serums, tried and tested by a beauty editor

Retinol can boost collagen production, which helps to hydrate your skin and target fine lines - (Lucy Partington/The Independent)

Retinol, a derivative of vitamin A, has long been hailed as the skincare gold standard, and for good reason. Consistently recommended by dermatologists and skincare professionals, retinol is a powerhouse ingredient proven to improve skin tone, texture and health.

Originally developed to treat extreme cases of acne, retinol has since earned its place in the world of anti-ageing skincare thanks to its ability to boost cell turnover – a process that not only helps unclog pores and smooth rough skin, but that also reduces the appearance of both pigmentation and large pores. However, most impressively, vitamin A also stimulates the production of collagen, in turn hydrating skin and, over time, helping to diminish fine lines and wrinkles.

But you’ve probably heard a lot about the downsides of retinol. Over the years, the ingredient has gained a reputation for dryness, irritation and sensitivity, especially when overused or introduced too quickly into a skincare routine. Those side effects are still possible, but skincare technology has since improved, and many serums and creams are now formulated to minimise irritation. There are even formulas designed for sensitive skin.

To help you wade through the sea of retinol products all claiming to reap dramatic results, I have been using creams and serums to see how they fare. After weeks of writing, I have tested the potency, consistency on the skin, and other factors that will definitely matter when choosing the right one for you.

How I tested

I tried and tested the best retinol serums and creams on the market (Lucy Partington/The Independent)

Each retinol serum was incorporated into my routine for a minimum of two weeks. I assessed each using the following criteria:

  • Formula: I noted the potency of the retinol in the formula, whether the ingredients were suited to specific skincare concerns such as pigmentation, acne and fine lines and wrinkles, and I acknowledged which formulas were suitable for all skin types, including sensitive skin.
  • Texture: I examined the consistency of the formula and whether it was lightweight on the skin, how quickly it absorbed, and whether it sat well with other skincare products and underneath make-up.
  • Early skin changes: I assessed any immediate or early changes to the skin’s appearance, such as changes in texture, pigmentation and brightness. I noted any initial dryness or irritation.
  • Value for money: I considered the price of the product and whether it felt fair and reflective of the ingredients contained, their potency, and the amount of product you get for your money.

Below, see her top retinol picks for every skin type and budget.

The best retinol creams and serums for 2025 are:

  • Best overall – Naturium retinaldehyde cream serum: £32, Amazon.co.uk
  • Best budget buy – The Ordinary retinal 0.2% emulsion: £15.20, Amazon.co.uk
  • Best for sensitive skin – CeraVe resurfacing retinol serum with ceramides and niacinamide: £16.09, Amazon.co.uk

Naturium retinaldehyde cream serum

Rating: 5/5

Best: Retinol cream overall

Product size: 50ml

Cruelty-free: Yes

Retinol strength: 0.05%

Why we love it

  • Great price point
  • Effective but gentle formula
  • Lightweight
  • Suitable for all skin types

Launched in the UK back in 2022, Naturium is a brand that offers effective formulas rooted in science at a fair price point. This cream harnesses the power of retinaldehyde – which is more effective yet gentler than pure retinol – to help target fine lines, uneven skin tone, and texture. I loved the lightweight formula of this cream, and I found that it absorbed quickly and didn’t cause any dryness or irritation, despite using it every night.

It’s one of the most affordable retinal formulas available, and I like that it’s also fragrance-free, making it suitable for pretty much all skin types. Combine that with the expensive-looking packaging and you’ve got a seriously impressive product that could easily cost a lot more than its £32 price point.

The Ordinary retinal 0.2% emulsion

Rating: 5/5

Best: Budget retinol cream

Product size: 15ml

Cruelty-free: Yes

Retinol strength: 0.2%

Why we love it

  • Affordable
  • Great ingredients
  • Lightweight formula

Take note

  • Small bottle

The Ordinary’s serum is the most affordable yet effective formula I’ve found. A brand known for democratising skincare, this product doesn’t disappoint. Bolstered with 0.2 per cent retinaldehyde (it doesn’t sound like a lot, I know, but it’s enough to be extremely effective), it also contains oats for their soothing properties, which will also help reduce any sensitivity or dryness occurring.

I love that it’s suitable for all skin types, and since only a pea-sized amount is needed a couple of times a week, this tube should last you a few months.

Neutrogena retinol boost serum

Rating: 4/5

Best: Multi-purpose retinol cream

Product size: 30ml

Cruelty-free: No

Retinol strength: 0.05%

Why we love it

  • Silk-feeling
  • Hyaluronic acid
  • No dryness or irritation

Another great choice for retinol newbies, I was impressed with the silky-feeling, lightweight texture of this product. Alongside pure retinol, it uses herbal extracts of myrtle, which improve the overall efficacy of the serum, plus hero ingredient hyaluronic acid helps to lock in much-needed moisture for long-lasting hydration.

I noticed my skin looked more radiant and smoother after just a couple of uses, and I didn’t get any dryness or irritation despite using it a bit more frequently than I would recommend.

Dermatica personalised formula

Rating: 5/5

Best: Personalised formula

Product size: 12.5ml

Cruelty-free: Yes

Retinol strength: Variable

Why we love it

  • Personalised
  • Attention to detail
  • Affordable
  • Glowing skin and reduced breakouts

Take note

  • Causes dry skin initially

Dermatica was the first brand to offer personalised prescription formulas, and it’s a firm favourite of mine. Before purchasing, customers have to fill in an online consultation form and submit photos of their skin for a dermatologist to review. From there, they consider your skin conditions and desired results, then use these to create a custom, prescription-strength formula, sent in the post by subscription.

While not all formulas will incorporate tretinoin (the most potent form of vitamin A), most will, and if you follow the instructions, results are pretty much guaranteed over the course of a few months. I found that the cream serum initially dried my skin out, but that subsided within a few weeks of use as my skin acclimatised, and what followed was glowing skin and reduced breakouts.

Your first month is just £2.90, but that rises to £24.99. The Klira subscription below is much more expensive, but that’s still a big monthly outlay.

Kate Somerville retinol vitamin C moisturizer

Rating: 4.5/5

Best: Retinol cream for pigmentation

Product size: 50ml

Cruelty-free: Yes

Retinol strength: Not listed

Why we love it

  • Results-driven formula
  • Combines retinol and vitamin C
  • Brightening

Take note

  • Expensive

Kate Somerville is a brand you can always rely on for creating potent, results-driven formulas, and this cream is no exception. While it may be pricey, it combines the power of both retinol and vitamin C and I loved the thick, comforting, velvety feel of this formula – it feels like the most luxe of the bunch.

Incredibly hydrating, thanks to the addition of hyaluronic acid, over time it will help to reduce the look of hyperpigmentation and will help to brighten the overall look of skin. It’s best to incorporate this cream into your routine slowly – to begin with, use it around twice a week and gradually increase use to prevent dryness.

Facetheory retinal supreme MultiCream 0.2%

Rating: 4.5/5

Best: Sustainable retinol cream

Product size: 50ml

Cruelty-free: Yes

Retinol strength: 0.2%

Why we love it

  • Lightweight
  • Packed with good ingredients
  • Cruelty free

Take note

  • May slightly stain pillows due to natural retinal colouring

I found this cream a standout addition to my existing skincare routine. British brand Facetheory prides itself on being both cruelty-free and sustainable, and this cream is lightweight and gentle, but effective. I found that, over time, it’ll really help to improve skin texture and radiance without causing any unwanted irritation.

Retinal is especially potent and fast-acting (Lucy Partington/The Independent)

I particularly like that it comes in a variety of strengths, so beginners can start with the 0.05 per cent option, gradually building up to 0.1 per cent and then up again to this 0.2 per cent product once their skin has acclimatised to vitamin A. I also liked that the formula incorporates a blend of hardworking and hydrating ingredients, including hyaluronic acid, glycerin and niacinamide, which help support the skin’s barrier. The only downside is that I noticed a slight yellow stain left behind on my white pillow cases.

CeraVe resurfacing retinol serum with ceramides and niacinamide

Rating: 4.5/5

Best: For sensitive skin

Product size: 30ml

Cruelty-free: No

Retinol strength: 0.1%

Why we love it

  • Trusted brand
  • Great for sensitive skin
  • Great entry to retinols
  • Includes niacinamide

One of my favourite brands, CeraVe’s take on retinol is as you’d expect: packed with skin-boosting ceramides, developed with sensitive skin in mind and helps maintain the delicate skin barrier. The formula is lightweight, absorbs quickly and contains encapsulated retinol alongside liquorice root extract and is designed to help reduce the look of any scarring left behind by acne, but it also helps brighten the skin.

Not only is it suitable for sensitive skin, but it would also be a great entry point into retinol for anybody new to the ingredient or curious about it. I also loved the inclusion of niacinamide – a hardworking, multi-tasking ingredient that not only works to soothe and strengthen skin but also helps to reduce oil production and the appearance of pores.

The Inkey List blemish clearing moisturiser

Rating: 3.5/5

Best: For acne-prone skin

Product size: 50ml

Cruelty-free: Yes

Retinol strength: 0.2%

Why we love it

  • Calms blemishes overnight
  • Includes vitamin C
  • No dryness
  • Affordable

This moisturiser promises to calm blemishes overnight. I was sceptical, but this held up on test. Alongside retinol, this clever moisturiser uses an ingredient called novoretin, which helps to bolster its effects. It combines a blend of vitamin C and sulphur that work together to help visibly reduce spots and breakouts whilst working to smooth uneven texture.

On the surface, this moisturiser might sound like it has the potential to cause dryness, but I found the opposite. The texture of the cream itself is light, and it sinks into the skin quickly. Considering its affordable price point, this moisturiser is an impressive multi-tasking hero perfect for anybody with acne- or breakout-prone skin.

La Roche-Posay retinol B3 serum

Rating: 4/5

Best: Retinol serum for reactive skin

Product size: 30ml

Cruelty-free: Yes

Retinol strength: 0.3%

Why we love it

  • Lightweight serum
  • Absorbs quickly

Take note

  • Can feel sticky

I was very impressed with this serum. It delivered visible smoothing and brightening results while still being kind to my somewhat sensitive and sometimes reactive skin.

The gentle, lightweight visibly smooths and brightens (Lucy Partington/The Independent)

The serum itself combines pure retinol with soothing vitamin B3 – niacinamide – which is what makes it a good choice for those new to retinoids or for anyone prone to irritation. Though it felt a bit sticky at first, the lightweight texture easily absorbs into your skin. I found that if you layer moisturiser over the top, that feeling subsides even faster.

Though this particular product doesn’t come in multiple strengths like some retinol serums do, it is a well-balanced formula that means you can keep using it consistently in your routine. I firmly believe this to be a solid, no-fuss product from an excellent French pharmacy brand that has always had a strong focus on overall skin health.

Nip + Fab retinol fix overnight cream 3%

Rating: 4.5/5

Best: Lightweight retinol cream

Product size: 50ml

Cruelty-free: Yes

Retinol strength: 0.3%

Why we love it

  • Overnight cream
  • Pure retinol
  • Time-release technology
  • Smoothes and hydrates too

A reformulated version of Nip+Fab’s retinol fix overnight cream, it’s now much better than the previous version. Instead of using a vitamin A derivative known as retinyl palmitate, it now features pure retinol, which is 20 per cent more potent.

It uses clever time-release and encapsulation technology to ensure it’s able to effectively absorb into the skin and be as effective as possible. It also combines bakuchiol, a naturally occurring, plant-based retinol alternative proven to encourage skin cell turnover. The three per cent in its name refers to the total amount of retinoid ingredients; the actual amount of pure retinol is 0.3 per cent.

I enjoyed using this light formula and loved that it also features ceramides to help smooth and hydrate skin. I also liked the fact that there are multiple products within the retinol fix line, meaning there is something to suit everybody across all skin types.

Murad retinal ReSculpt overnight treatment

Rating: 4.5/5

Best: Retinol cream for mature skin

Product size: 30ml

Cruelty-free: Yes

Retinol strength: Not listed

Why we love it

  • Great for seasoned retinol users
  • Leaves skin soft and hydrated
  • Not drying

Take note

  • Not for newbies
  • Expensive

Another product that uses retinal, I’d recommend this particular bottle for seasoned retinol users. While I can’t vouch for all of its impressive – and transformative – stats, which say this moisturiser can smooth deep-set wrinkles in two weeks, and increase skin elasticity in four weeks, I can tell you that Murad is a brand I trust implicitly. This powerful but effective formula is a joy to use, and left my skin feeling soft and hydrated – and I didn’t notice any drying or sensitivity. It’s expensive, yes, but with a commitment to regular use, I think the results will speak for themselves.

Dermalogica dynamic skin retinol serum

Rating: 4/5

Best: Retinol serum for clinical-level results

Product size: 30ml

Cruelty-free: Yes

Retinol strength: Not listed

Why we love it

  • Hardworking formula
  • Formulated with hydrating ingredients

Take note

  • High price point
  • Not suitable for beginners

I’ve tested Dermalogica products on and off for years, but this was my first time trying a retinol from the brand. This fast-acting formula works to target signs of ageing, and it’s made with a 3.5 per cent retinoid complex that promises to smooth fine lines, improve skin texture and even out its tone.

Although 3.5 per cent seems like quite a high strength, it’s not as high as you might assume. Dermalogica doesn’t disclose the exact amount of active retinol, but they confirmed to me that this is the percentage of retinoids in the formula; that is, the amount of vitamin A derivatives like retinol.

Despite its soothing ingredients, I wouldn’t recommend this for those new to retinol (Lucy Partington/The Independent)

So, while it is a potent blend, it’s also balanced with soothing ingredients, including squalane and liquorice root extract, which both help reduce the risk of both dryness and irritation. However, it is important to note that I’d recommend this product for people with existing retinoid experience rather than complete beginners.

With that in mind, I think this is a great option for anybody looking to level up their retinol game, but the premium price tag may be a barrier for some, especially when more affordable alternatives exist in the market. But for those looking for clinical-level results from a trusted, heritage, professional-grade band, it’s a serious contender.

Skin Rocks retinoid 1

Rating: 5/5

Best: Entry-level retinoid

Product size: 30ml

Cruelty-free: Yes

Retinol strength: 0.2%

Why we love it

  • Gentle but effective
  • Refillable packaging
  • Formulated with hydrating ingredients

Not just a great entry-level retinoid serum, this is also a great starting point if you’re new to Skin Rocks, Caroline Hirons’s brand. Using 0.2 per cent hydroxypinacolone retinoate – also known as HPR – it’ll help visibly reduce fine lines, dark spots and breakouts.

To help ensure skin remains nourished and hydrated, it’s also formulated with squalane and vitamin E, as well as bakuchiol and soybean extract, which help boost the HPR’s effectiveness. A real hero product, I love how this made my skin feel, and the fact that it’s also refillable is another bonus.

Paula’s Choice pro retinaldehyde dual-retinoid treatment

Rating: 4.5/5

Best: Intermediate retinol serum

Product size: 30ml

Cruelty-free: Yes

Retinol strength: 0.1%

Why we love it

  • Fragrance-free
  • Suitable for most skin types

Take note

  • High price point
  • Not suitable for beginners

This is an excellent option for anyone looking to bridge the gap between beginner and advanced retinol products. A well-formulated serum, it combines retinal – a potent but less irritating form of vitamin A – with granactive retinoid, for a dual approach to targeting fine lines, loss of firmness and uneven skin tone. I noticed minimal irritation, which comes thanks to the added soothing ingredients, such as allantoin, liquorice root extract and a blend of peptides.

This is a great transition between entry-level and more potent retinols (Lucy Partington/The Independent)

The thing that sets this particular serum apart from others is the use of retinal, which works faster in the skin than traditional retinol, but it’s gentler on skin than prescription-strength options.

It’s a good option for anyone who has outgrown their entry-level retinoid but isn’t quite ready to go into the deep end just yet. I liked the lightweight texture, and I found that it layers nicely with moisturiser, although I appreciate that it’s not the most budget-friendly product. That said, it will deliver great results.

Medik8 crystal retinal 10

Rating: 5/5

Best: High strength retinol

Product size: 30ml

Cruelty-free: Yes

Retinol strength: Not listed

Why we love it

  • Effective formula

Take note

  • Best for those who have been using vitamin A products for a while

This is one of five different strengths available when it comes to Medik8’s retinal, and it’s one best used by those who’ve been on their vitamin A journey for a while, who feel comfortable using it and are looking for a step up in terms of product strength and potency. The formula is boosted with hyaluronic acid, glycerin and vitamin E to help hydrate and nourish skin. Like with other formulas, I would suggest introducing this one slowly into your routine, but over time it’ll help boost skin’s radiance and improve its overall health.

SkinBetterScience alpharet overnight cream

Rating: 5/5

Best: Retinol cream for lines and wrinkles

Product size: 30ml

Cruelty-free: Yes

Retinol strength: Not listed

Why we love it

  • High potency formula
  • Minimal irritation

Take note

  • Prescription strength so needs to be bought under the guidance of an expert

SkinBetterScience is a brand beloved, used and recommended by almost every dermatologist and expert that I have spoken to – and for good reason. As a brand, it works with derms, plastic surgeons and other healthcare pros to deliver impressive, effective and best-in-class products.

This is one of its most talked-about products from the brand, but before I continue, note that it is a prescription-strength formula, so you have to buy it under the guidance of a professional (which can be done online). However, the formula itself is pretty impressive: it blends a retinoid with AHAs for visible skin improvement with minimal irritation. I would always suggest incorporating it into your routine slowly, but once your skin is fully acclimatised, the results will be impressive.

Klira the special night cream

Rating: 5/5

Best: Prescription-strength retinol cream

Product size: 15ml

Cruelty-free: No

Retinol strength: Variable

Why we love it

  • Created and backed by dermatologists
  • Personalised formula

Take note

  • High price point

Klira is the brainchild of consultant dermatologist Dr Emma Craythorne. Unlike off-the-shelf serums, this monthly prescription cream is tailored to your specific skin concerns. Users are asked to fill out a detailed SkinSize questionnaire and then submit photos, which are then reviewed by a dermatologist. The results are then compounded in a UK-based lab using prescription-grade ingredients.

Your questionnaire and photos are reviewed by a dermatologist (Lucy Partington/The Independent)

My formula is a blend of azelaic acid and tretinoin (the strongest form of vitamin A, only available on prescription), but other ingredients available include hydroquinone and ivermectin, each of which is selected based on your own skin goals and tolerance levels. As well as being given a personalised formula, you can also choose your preferred base cream, whether that’s a rich formula or something more lightweight.

I’m also a big fan of the sleek and sustainable packaging, and the streamlined process means your routine isn’t overly complicated – instead, you just have one potent product that evolves with your skin and its tolerance levels. With prices starting from £59 per month, it’s incredibly expensive, but if you can afford it, the clinical precision, ongoing dermatological advice and visible results are worth it.

Your questions about retinol creams and serums answered

What is the best retinol cream or serum?

There is definitely something for everyone in this mix. If you’re at the start of your journey, then the Naturium retinaldehyde cream serum is a good choice. If money is tight, look to The Ordinary retinal 0.2% emulsion; I can’t overstate the effectiveness for the price.

However, if you’d prefer something a little bit more targeted to your own individual skin concerns, I can’t recommend Klira enough. The combination of a totally unique formula and tailored advice means you really can improve your overall skin health without having to see a dermatologist face-to-face.

What does retinol do to your skin?

Retinol is derived from vitamin A and works as an intense exfoliator for your skin. It can help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles as well as give your skin a plump, fresh look.

Can you use retinol in combination with other skincare products?

Generally, it’s a good rule of thumb not to mix retinol with vitamin C, benzoyl peroxide, and AHA/BHA acids. Some retinol products will include these ingredients in the product in order to make them safe for the skin. But it is certainly safe to mix with other skincare routine classics such as moisturising ingredients like hyaluronic acid, as well as ceramides, and of course, SPF.

Does retinol help with acne?

Retinol can help with acne, but you should always check with a doctor or dermatologist where you can. Retinol can help acne by preventing clogged pores. However, retinol can be very harsh. When you first use a retinol, your skin will probably become worse before it gets better. This so-called “retinol purge” can cause redness, irritation, and peeling, so while it can help with acne, it won’t solve it immediately.

How do you introduce retinol to your routine?

If you’re curious, always remember that the key is to start low and slow, and always be both consistent and patient – visible results can take up to three months to see. Beginners should choose a low-strength product, applying it two or three times a week after a nighttime cleanse. It can be followed, or sandwiched between, a moisturiser, too. Over time, your skin will build tolerance, and it’s at that point that you can gradually increase both frequency and potency.

How do I apply retinol?

After a gentle cleanse, apply a pea-sized amount in a thin layer across your face, making sure to avoid the eye area and ensuring you don't get it in your mouth, nose or eyes. Some dermatologists recommend the “sandwich method” for sensitive skin. Start with a layer of moisturiser, then apply the retinol, and then add another layer of moisturiser over the top to make the product slightly less intense on your skin.

How long does retinol take to have an effect?

If you’re looking for a speedy skin fix, then retinol is probably not for you, but it is certainly effective. Most users start to see results between three to six months, and the most noticeable results will happen at around six to 12 months.

What’s the difference between retinal and retinol?

Retinal and retinol are forms of vitamin A; both are retinoids. These products convert into active retinoic acid, which is what makes these products effective. Retinal is only one step away from its conversion into retinoic acid, unlike retinol, which takes longer. However, retinal is harder to stabilise, which is why retinals tend to be rarer and more expensive.

Hypothetically, this means retinal is faster and stronger. It should mean that it’s more effective, but also more likely to irritate your skin than retinol. However, it actually varies from brand to brand. Many retinals are sold as encapsulated formulas, so the active retinoic acid is eked out over the course of a day, making them less irritating.
