12-year-old boy suffers broken back in 44ft fall from roof of swimming baths

A 12-year-old boy who fell 44ft through the roof a swimming baths has suffered a broken back.

The youngster, who has not been named, miraculously survived the drop, from the roof of Parr Swimming and Fitness centre, yesterday evening.

Police and emergency services were called to the St Helens premises, on Ashcroft Street, at around 6.20pm following reports that three youths - including the 12-year-old boy - had been seen on the roof.

The child was taken to Alder Hey children's hospital and today it was confirmed he suffered multiple but not life-threatening injuries, including a broken back.

His condition is reported to be stable.

It is understood the boy narrowly avoided much more serious injury, which could have proved fatal, after hitting the water instead of metal bars located in the shallow end of the pool.

Last night police and a team of forensic officers were at the scene, with officers seen inside the building.

A St Helens Council spokesperson said: "Our thoughts firstly are with the family following this incident at Parr Swimming and Fitness Centre.

"Although we have put in place numerous measures to prevent anyone accessing the roof at the centre we would also urge parents to talk to their children about the serious risks they face if they try to climb on to buildings."

On its Facebook page the council confirmed the main pool is closed to the public until further notice, but classes in the small pool will continue and the gym is open as usual today.
