100 jobs created as new hotel opens in central Glasgow

Dalata Hotel Group has opened its 50th hotel, the Clayton Glasgow City, creating 100 jobs locally.

It is the Irish chain's first Clayton hotel in Scotland, following the opening of its Maldron Hotel Glasgow last August.

Situated on Clyde Street on the site of the city’s Grade A listed Custom House building, the four-star property is part of a restoration of the historical area, known as St Enoch.

The refurbished building serves as the entrance to the hotel, along with the reception, ballroom and event spaces. Adjacent and connected by a glazed ceiling, the modern, 16-storey property houses the Custom House Bar & Restaurant.

The hotel’s 303 rooms offer city or river views, while the terrace on the seventh floor provides an entertaining space for both corporate and private events.

Dermot Crowley, chief executive of Dalata Hotel Group, stated: “The hotel, our first with investment partners Union Investment, has been expertly developed at Glasgow’s Custom House, an iconic listed building that has been part of Glasgow for 180 years.

“This truly stand-out property has been made possible through the hard work of our partners on the project – McAleer and Rushe who constructed the hotel on behalf of the developers Artisan Real Estate and our landlords Union Investment.

“We have created 100 new jobs and have already assembled a great team under general manager Hazel Galloway, who successfully led the team at Maldron Hotel Glasgow City previously.”

The new opening is the group's 17th hotel across the UK, where it operates 11 Clayton hotels and six Maldron hotels, along with four under construction in Brighton, Manchester, Liverpool and London.

Martin Breslin, regional partnership executive at VisitScotland, added: “At a time when we are working hard with partners to restore the city’s tourism industry to growth, this is a welcome addition to Glasgow capacity for attracting new events and leisure business in the months and years ahead.

“This new hotel, with its sensitive incorporation of the historic Custom House building, represents a fresh boost for the city centre, and is a great sign that Glasgow is back in business.”
