The Tokyo Organizing Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games plans to prepare 1 million tickets for the 2020 Games for students of high school age or younger. The move will be part of a school cooperation program that provides young people opportunities to watch the events, the committee said.
The commitee held a meeting of its expert panel on tickets on Wednesday and confirmed a general policy on ticket prices for the Games. The school cooperation program was also proposed in the meeting.
Through a similar program, 110,000 such tickets were issued at the 2012 London Games and 300,000 tickets issued at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro.
"[The number of tickets] will be a feature of the 2020 Tokyo Games," said Hiroshi Kubo, deputy chairman of the panel of experts, who is also chairman of the board for the Yomiuri Giants.
The commitee plans to expand a ticket price range greater than that of the London Games. The most expensive ticket at the Tokyo games will top the most expensive at the London Games -- a 2,012 pounds (about 290,000 yen) ticket to see the opening ceremony. The cheapest ticket will likewise cost less than the 20 pounds (about 2,900 yen) to see preliminary round badminton matches and other events at the 2012 Games.
At its next meeting, the panel will discuss prices of expensive tickets with an option of a meal or other amenities, and admission tickets at 2,020 yen to represent the year of the Games.
