NEW YORK _ A driver plowed into a crowd of pedestrians in New York's bustling Times Square on Thursday, killing one person and injuring at least 22 others, officials said.
Police said early indications were that the crash was not terror-related, but tied to a driver with a history of driving under the influence of intoxicants.
"Based on the information we have at this moment, there is no indication that this was an act of terrorism," New York Mayor Bill de Blasio told reporters.
"This is a tough day for New York City," he added.
"It is believed to be an isolated incident, it remains under investigation," the New York City Police Department said in a Tweet.
Authorities said the driver, a 26-year-old man from the Bronx, was apprehended by police as he tried to run away after the car flipped over at the northwest corner of 45th Street and Broadway.
Emergency vehicles rushed to the site where the maroon Honda Accord sat tilted against a short post, its right wheels in the air.
The arrested man, whose name was not released, has a history of past offenses for driving under the influence, authorities said.
"The car landed sideways and I saw a gentleman underneath the car and another gentleman was pulling him out, and it was a real mess. There were flames coming from the car," Annette Pearl, a witness to the crash, told CNN. "I started rushing my kids up the street and people just scattered all over the place. ... The car was going so fast," she said.
