ONE of the world's fastest-growing sports could soon be offered at Beresfield Golf Club.
Four padel courts, along with a 16-bay golf driving range, are part of a $1.6 million plan lodged with City of Newcastle.
After it was closed for several months since the previous operator's lease ended in September 2025, Beresfield Golf Club reopened to the public earlier this year under new manager Clublinks.
A Statement of Environmental Effects (SEE) lodged with the plans said the padel courts, driving range and netting would complement the existing golf course.
"By providing complementary recreational activities, the development will expand opportunities for members and visitors, increasing the site's versatility without altering its primary recreational character," the SEE said.
"Overall, the proposal builds on the existing recreational character of the site, improving usability and providing additional, complementary facilities."
The SEE said the proposal will cater to a broader range of age groups and users and has been designed to fit seamlessly into the existing site layout.
Padel is a racquet sport that combines elements of tennis and squash, and is typically played in doubles.
The courts are smaller than a standard tennis court and are enclosed by glass walls and mesh fencing.
The club was upgraded before reopening under a 15-year lease with Clublinks, including replacing failed bridges and repairs to on-course buildings.
The course features extensive landscaped open space, fairways, greens, a clubhouse and pro shop.
If approved, the development will be delivered in three stages, first the driving range, second the netting and third the padel courts.
The netting will be installed along the eastern and western boundaries of the driving range and is about 25 metres tall.
Clublinks plans to open the driving range and padel courts from 9am to 10pm each day.
