A man in Georgia has died after he cut his arm while breaking into his own home, police said.
Grovetown cops said the unidentified homeowner was intoxicated and could not find his keys during the incident, which occurred on 23 July.
Based on a preliminary investigation, authorities believe the man broke his window to gain entry to his property and sustained a severe laceration to his arm, WRDW reported.
“The injury resulted in significant blood loss, and he later lost consciousness,” police said in a statement to the media. “At this time, there are no indications of foul play. This appears to be a tragic accident.”
The name of the deceased man has not been released as authorities in Grovetown, which has a population of around 15,000 people, are currently working to notify his family.
Footage from the scene broadcast by WRDW shows an detached property in a wooded area with a porch in front and an American flag on the roof. Two orange bollards were placed outside an area that appears to be a covering for a vehicle.
According to Drink Aware around 700,000 people die from alcohol-related injuries and accidents every year, accounting for over a quarter of all alcohol-caused deaths.
The World Health Organisation and other public health groups suggest that these incidents include deaths from falls, drowning, fires, and trauma involving alcohol.
The Georgia death comes after a similar incident in Michigan eight years ago, when a young man passed away after apparently cutting himself on shattered window glass while breaking into a home.
Following the incident in May 2018, WPBN-TV reported that the 36-year-old victim was found bleeding on the property’s roof.
Police said he left a party, eventually broke into a house and tried to escape through a window after a brief confrontation with the owner, according to the Associated Press.
Public Safety Director Matt Breed said at the time investigators believed the man severed an artery in his arm while breaking windows with his hands.
