Gavin Newsom Slams Chevron, Says Gas Prices Still 'Elevated' Due to Trump's 'Reckless' Iran War: 'Skip the Brand Names'

Las,Vegas,-,Circa,June,2019:,Chevron,Retail,Gas,Station.

Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) has reaffirmed his call to snub energy giant Chevron Corp‘s (NYSE:CVX) gas stations, accusing oil companies of profiting from high costs as ordinary Americans continue paying more at the pump amid the Iran war.

Gavin Newsom Urges Residents to Avoid Chevron

On the social media platform X on Saturday, Newsom’s official Press Office shared a screenshot of a California Energy Commission statement containing an advisory from the administration on gas prices.

“Gas prices are still elevated nationwide because of Trump’s reckless Iran war,” the press office said in the post. The Press Office then urged consumers to avoid “brand names like Chevron” when refueling vehicles.

Chevron did not immediately respond to Benzinga‘s request for comment.

“Unbranded gas = lower cost and same quality in California,” the post said, adding that customers should “shop around” for gas. “Keep the extra cash for your holiday, not Big Oil’s pocket,” the post said.

According to a report by CBS News in May, the call to snub the energy company came after Chevron put up signs criticizing lawmakers in Sacramento, saying that the leaders were “choosing foreign oil and fuels over local jobs and lower costs.”

Following the signs, Newsom urged residents to avoid name brands like Chevron. Notably, Newsom has advocated for clean energy projects over fossil fuels during his time in office. In January, the Governor touted California selling 2.5 million electric vehicles since he took office in 2019.

Gas Prices Remain Elevated

On Saturday, GasBuddy analyst Patrick De Haan said that the Fourth of July holiday saw prices fall “81 cents lower than their May peak,” as well as dropping 65 cents YoY. Gas prices in 41 states remained below $4/gallon, the analyst said in his post.

According to data from the American Automobile Association (AAA), the national average price of gas was $3.8040/gallon on Sunday.

States like Hawaii, California and Washington continued to pay over $5/gallon, with Hawaii gas being the costliest in the country at an average of $5.4580/gallon. In July 2025, the price for a gallon of gas on average was around $3.1/gallon, according to AAA.

The West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude fell to $68.43/bbl at the time of writing this article, while the Brent crude commanded a price of $71.71/bbl at press time. However, the oil ETF United States Oil Fund (NYSE:USO) rose 0.69% to $103.98 on July 2nd at market close.

Iran War Updates

Uncertainty continued to loom over the Strait of Hormuz as Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs, Kazem Gharibabadi, reaffirmed that the Strait of Hormuz was under Tehran’s command.

His comments came following a U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) security summit in Bahrain with countries like Qatar, the UAE, Saudi Arabia and more to discuss regional security.

Meanwhile, the Iranian government will begin the state funeral of the country’s former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in February following a U.S.-Israeli joint operation that kicked off the Iran war. The funeral is expected to last 10-12 hours, according to an Al Jazeera report.

On the other hand, Israel conducted strikes in Lebanon’s Southern city of Nabatieh despite a framework to end the fighting on Sunday.

Notably, President Donald Trump reportedly said that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has requested a meeting at the White House. “We get along very good. [Netanyahu] knows who the boss is,” Trump said.
