Eddie Howe odds shift puzzles Rangers legend Ally McCoist as he admits Celtic next manager 'surprise'

Ally McCoist admits he's puzzled Celtic haven't yet secured Eddie Howe as bookies slashed odds on him becoming next Tottenham manager.

Howe has been backed from 20/1 to 6/1 to replace Jose Mourinho following his sudden sacking on Monday.

The former Bournemouth manager looked all set for a move to Parkhead until his camp moved to quell expectation that a deal was imminent.

Talks had been held between the two camps. And while the 43-year-old remains a frontrunner to succeed Neil Lennon and start the Hoops rebuild, doubts are now emerging over the length of time it's taking to finalise a deal.

Especially now he has moved up the pecking order in the Spurs betting.

Mourinho was bulleted this week amid the Premier League giants' Euro Super League furore - and just days before they take on Manchester City in the League Cup Final.

Former Rangers hero McCoist is certainly scratching his head over Howe's situation.

He told talkSPORT: "Here is an interesting question, you mentioned Eddie Howe coming in from 20-1 to 6-1 in the betting, does that mean he will go out the way for the Celtic job?

"One of the reasons I am asking is that personally I have been a little bit surprised that he hasn't taken the Celtic job if it was offered to him.

"As you say he wasn't in a job so no deals had to be done with any other club. He was available.

"I thought it would have made sense if he was offered the job and he wanted it and was going to take it that now would have been the time to take it when he had nothing holding him back.

"So I think that is going to be an interesting one moving forwards as well."
