ZZ Top founding member Dusty Hill dies aged 72

ZZ Top founding member Dusty Hill has died aged 72, his bandmates have said.

The singer and bassist with the 1970s rock group, whose hits include Legs and Gimme All Your Lovin', died this week in his sleep at home in Houston, Texas.

Hill recently dropped out of ZZ Top concerts due to a hip injury, the Daily Mail reported.

There was a show scheduled for Wednesday night in Simpsonville, South Carolina, although there was no news on whether it would go ahead.

Bandmates Billy Gibbons and Frank Beard shared news of his death on Instagram.

They said: "We are saddened by the news today that our Compadre, Dusty Hill, has passed away in his sleep at home in Houston, TX.

"We will forever be connected to that Blues Shuffle in C. You will be missed greatly, amigo."

Hill was one of the founding members of the band, which formed in 1969 and became famous for Hill and Gibbons' trademark long beards.

ZZ Top released 15 albums, won several awards and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Among their biggest albums were Tres Hombres, released in 1973, which reached number eight in the US Billboard 200 albums chart and featured hits La Grange and Jesus Just Left Chicago.

Then a decade later they released Eliminator and enjoyed success with massive hits Legs, Gimme All Your Lovin' and Sharp Dressed Man.
