Zumba-mad woman becomes UK's first qualified instructor with Down's syndrome

Zumba fan Hannah Payton has become the UK’s first qualified instructor with Down’s syndrome.

Hannah got hooked on the Latin aerobics routines during lockdown when she had to shield due to her condition.

And when she finally met instructor Emma Golpys once gyms reopened, she became determined to qualify as a teacher herself.

Hannah, 24, said: “I had a dream to be a Zumba instructor and it’s come true.

“I could not be happier, I’m really proud. My family and friends are over the moon for me too, especially my sister Nicola.”

Hannah is even determined to get her 11-month-old niece involved, adding: “I hope she’ll come along for some baby Zumba.”

Hannah took up the classes in lockdown (Mercury Press & Media Ltd.)

Based around four Latin rhythms, Zumba was created 20 years ago after aerobics instructor Alberto Perez forgot his usual music and put on a salsa tape instead.

Hannah, from Atherton, Gtr Manchester, said: “I want to prove it’s for everyone.

“You can stay active and fit, surrounded by other people who just love to dance.”

Hannah signed up after lockdown put an end to her swimming and badminton.

Mum Jutta, 55, said: “She really suffered but the Zumba massively helped. I did have my doubts if people would give her a chance but we’ve been blown away.”
