Zuckerberg Wants to Put Superintelligence in Your Pocket

Mark Zuckerberg is back in the headlines as the Meta CEO has shared a new vision for the future of artificial intelligence. Where every individual will have access to a personal superintelligence, an AI that knows them deeply, helps achieve their goals, and empowers them in daily life.

In a letter posted the other day, Zuckerberg laid out Meta’s long-term direction on superintelligence, contrasting it sharply with other tech leaders who aim to centralize AI capabilities and focus on automation. Instead, Meta wants to put powerful AI in the hands of individuals.

Meta’s vision is to bring personal superintelligence to everyone. We believe in putting this power in people’s hands to direct it towards what they value in their own lives.

A Personal Approach to AI

He believes the true value of AI won’t just come from productivity gains or economic output, but from how it enables people to grow, create, and connect. While Zuckerberg acknowledged that general-purpose superintelligence is still in its early stages, he said the trend is clear: AI systems are starting to improve themselves, and the pace of advancement is expected to accelerate.

An even more meaningful impact on our lives will likely come from everyone having a personal superintelligence that helps you achieve your goals… and grow to become the person you aspire to be.

This personal AI, Zuckerberg said, would live on devices like smart glasses that can “see what we see, hear what we hear, and interact with us throughout the day.” Meta already has groundwork here with its push into AR wearables and multimodal AI assistants.

A Different Path from Competitors

In the letter, Zuckerberg took a subtle swipe at industry peers, some of whom are focused on building superintelligence that replaces human labor and then distributes the value through universal basic income or other forms of redistribution.

Meta’s stance is different: “People pursuing their individual aspirations is how we have always made progress expanding prosperity, science, health, and culture,” he said.

What About Infrastructure and Safety?

Zuckerberg acknowledged that building superintelligence at scale comes with new safety challenges. While Meta intends to share the benefits broadly, he emphasized the need to be cautious about what parts of the technology are made open source.

“We’ll need to be rigorous about mitigating these risks and careful about what we choose to open source.” He also reaffirmed that Meta has the “resources and the expertise” to build the infrastructure needed to bring this vision to billions.
