Tiger Woods will have to wait as Zozo Round 2 postponed

CHIBA, Japan — Tiger Woods will have to wait another day to see if he can take the outright lead at the Zozo Championship. Play was called at about 6:30 a.m local time on Friday morning after extended periods of rain.

After starting his round with three consecutive bogeys, Woods turned it around and shot a 6-under 64 in the first round on Thursday (Wednesday night ET) at Accordia Golf Narashino Country Club to share the lead with Gary Woodland.

The course had already taken on four-tenths of an inch of rain early Friday morning, Gary Young, Vice President of Rules and Competitions for the PGA Tour told reporters. The second round will now begin at 6:30 a.m. local time on Saturday (5:30 p.m. ET Friday) and they will not re-pair after the conclusion of the second round. The third round will be played Saturday until dark.

Officials expect it will take about two hours to complete the third round on Sunday and that the final round will start at 9 a.m. local time (8 p.m. ET Saturday).

“Although we are losing the golf course for the day today, we still feel very confident that we’ll be able to complete four rounds of golf by Sunday,” Young said.

If 72 holes cannot be completed by Sunday, the plan is to extend the tournament to Monday.

The winner of the Zozo Championship will receive $1.75 million. In all, there is a $9.75 million purse up for grabs in the 78-man, no-cut event that features some marquee groups for the second round:

  • Tiger Woods, Satoshi Kodaira and Tommy Fleetwood
  • Hideki Matsuyama, Jordan Spieth and Adam Scott
  • Justin Thomas, Rory McIlroy and Xander Schauffele
  • Patrick Reed, Jason Day and Tony Finau
